Is Traveller’s Insurance Worth It?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Traveling and family vacations are favorite pastimes of people all around the world. Months, sometimes years, are spent deciding where to go, when to go, which hotel to stay at and what activities to participate in. Money is saved for the trip. Long lists of what to bring are written down and checked over. One thing that is often overlooked is travel insurance. There are several pros and cons to purchasing travel insurance. To some, it may not be worth it. To others, it is essential.

The Pros of Travel Insurance

The greatest pro to purchasing travel insurance for your vacation or trip is the overall peace of mind that you will have. Vacations generally cost a few thousand dollars and the emotions of excitement and happy times behind them make them nearly priceless. Travel insurance can give you some security since you know that at least part of your vacation will be reimbursed should something go awry. Even if your regular insurance coverage will cover most issues, additional coverage might not hurt. It could mean a higher reimbursement, better health coverage if you are out of the country and it may cover the cost of a place to stay in the event of an emergency evacuation. Policies will also cover your luggage in some cases such as theft, damage or lost items.

The Cons of Travel Insurance

If you purchase travel insurance, you might end up paying for something twice because another type of insurance that you own might already cover things. People that plan to purchase the majority of their vacation on a credit card might find that their card has protection benefits when traveling. The card may cover lost or stolen items, accidents, or delays and cancellations. Your current health insurance plan may have coverage for emergencies when traveling and it is possible that your auto insurance plan already covers rental cars. It is important to check through all of your current policies before spending money on a travel insurance policy.

Another factor to keep in mind when considering travel insurance is the limitation that may be involved. Not all travel insurance policies are created equally. Many won’t reimburse any of your trip in the case of bad weather. If you spend lots of money for your trip and then simply decide not to go, you will not get any of your money back from the travel insurance company. If you have a health problem that related to a pre-existing condition while you are on vacation, it is not likely to be covered. Travel insurance also does not cover any trips in war zones.

Deciding if Travel Insurance Is Worth the Price

If you are still debating on purchasing travel insurance, there are a few things that you should take into consideration. Your destination and the activities that you play to do are the two most important factors. Are you traveling somewhere that might involve health risks? Will you be doing any risky sporting activities? The time of your and your overall health are also factors to think about. Some seasons are more dangerous for traveling. Most important, if you do decide to purchase travel insurance, always read the fine print before signing anything.  You want to know exactly what you are paying for.
