Kirkcudbright Voted one of UK’s Top 30 Coolest Places to Live

The Dumfries and Galloway town of Kirkcudbright has been recently named one of the “coolest” places to live in the UK – featuring as one of the only three Scottish towns in the list of thirty.

In a survey conducted by national UK newspaper, The Times, the town placed 28^th on the list, with the west Yorkshire village of Hebden Bridge claiming the coveted top spot.

Whilst competing with other fashionable residences across the UK, like Bethnal Green, Glastonbury and Folkestone, only two other Scottish locations made the list; Stockbridge in Edinburgh and Kelvingrove in Glasgow.

Lying on the banks of the River Dee close to the Solway Coast, Kirkcudbright was praised for its atmosphere, charm and artistic culture.

Fishing is prominent in the town harbour with hotels, Bed and Breakfasts and cottages in Kirkcudbright attracting tourists from across the UK during the summer months.

Long associated with the Glasgow art movement, Kirkcudbright was home to several prominent Scottish artists during the late 19^th century including George Henry, Edward Hornel and Jessie King as well as being frequented by members of the Scottish Colourists and famed poet Robert Burns.

The town’s artistic heritage drew particular praise with the list’s author commenting “Kirkcudbright’s artistic bent is obvious the minute you walk its streets”. The various summer events and festivities held in the town were also praised whilst the town was noted for its “quaint atmosphere and wonderful light”.
