I’m a devoted mother and I #FeelBeautifulFor my daughter, Ivy, first, and secondly for all the young girls I know looking to me for guidance and confidence. Self-esteem is a fragile creature to be nurtured with love and permitted to bask within the glow of acceptance. In a young girls’ formative years, self-esteem is easily splintered and crushed by negativity and harsh criticism. Rather than feeling good about themselves, they become overwrought with anxiety and develop a damaged or warped self-perception. Often it takes years to overcome self-esteem issues, and some girls’ never fully recover. It’s important I feel beautiful for all the young girls and women in my life, but I know the eyes watching me the most are Ivy’s, and even on a “frumpy” feeling day, I make myself #FeelBeautifulFor her.

I believe in nurturing and uplifting my daughter, hoping she never has self-esteem problems. Even at eight years old, she listens, learns, and forms opinions of herself. I lead by example, I encourage, I compliment. I tell her every day how much I love her, how proud I am of her. Accomplishments are applauded, and blunders analyzed and smoothed away. Own your mistakes, don’t let them own you, I tell her. Everyone makes mistakes, and they don’t define you. YOU define you.

The sky isn’t the limit; it’s merely a starting point. You can do and be anything if you’re willing to work hard.

You’re beautiful, smart, and unique. Nobody can take that from you. Nobody can minimize you.

Only unhappy people will try to rob you of your confidence. Ignore them. Be you, be proud, be humble and self-assured.

I’ve showered my daughter with love and praise from birth. I’m invested in her self-worth, and I want to see 110% return on that investment. A “Just Us Girls” night with my daughter consists of manicures, pedicures, and movies which deliver positive messages. An abundance of hugs, kisses, and snuggles are part of the mix. There is no such thing as too many hugs or positive affirmations. I share with her my “lady training”. Part of learning to be a lady is taking care of yourself, because it makes you feel better. It’s not for the benefit of others, but because you love you. She loves being like mama, and I love her being like me. It took me years to get to a comfortable place with my self-esteem, but once I “came into my own” I became unstoppable, and I’m projecting that onto Ivy.

High self-esteem in young girls and women is equally important to Dove and Walmart.
