Family Day Trip to Nusa Lembongan, Bali

 Nusa Lembongan is an island located 30 minutes from Sanur Bali. In addition to the local villages there are hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants so a stay on the island is possible; otherwise many companies offer day trips from Bali.

We decided on a day trip to the island to see if it was somewhere we would want to return to at a later date for a longer stay. The tour included a return fast boat to the island, a mangrove tour, village tour, visit to several beaches on the island, lunch, and time at the Lembongan Beach Club Resort.
Fast Boat to Nusa Lembongan

We departed Serangan on Equator fast boat ferries and the crossing takes approximately 30-40 mins. The trip to the island was fine, although it is wet season so the swells were high.

There is no wharf on Lembongan Island so you disembark through shallow water on the beach to the island. The first thing we noticed about the island is how pristine and clear the water was. The sand was powdery and the buildings being a few steps away from the beach intrigued us.

Tour of the Mangrove Forest

After a welcome drink our guides took us to our first tour the mangrove forest. The main mode of transportation on the island is by golf buggy. The kids had fun zipping around the island on the buggy. To access the mangroves we were taken through some local villages and it was amazing to see how the locals live.

A local guide then rowed us down the river as we attempted to spot birds and other animals. It was raining, unfortunately, and we were told that all the animals hide when it is wet.

Nearing the end of the tour you are rowed out of the mangrove forest into the sea and back around to your starting point.

The tour takes around 30-40 minutes.

Village Tour on Nusa Lembongan

We did have a snorkeling tour initially included in our itinerary however due to the bad weather it was cancelled and was replaced with a village and beach tour.

Our guide took us to the highest point on the island. It is 50 metres above sea level and what a spectacular view. From this point you can see the whole island. The island is around 40km but it will take you around 1 hour to drive around the whole island as the roads are gravel and have many potholes.

We then visited a couple of beaches including dream beach and the yellow suspension bridge that connects Nusa Penida another small island, with Nusa Lembongan. It is a footbridge or motorbike bridge only as it is narrow.

Finally we visited small fishing and seaweed villages and marveled at the simple and hard working life these people live. It was like being transported back in time when watching these villagers in action.

Games and Time at the Beach Club

After lunch at the beach club the kids played a bit of pool on the billiards table at the property. There is also a kids play area adjacent to the restaurant and Mo had a great time playing there. The day we visited was quite a stormy day so they still had all the rain covers on the chairs and not many people were enjoying the club because of this. The weather didn’t stop the boys from swimming in the pool, though.

After our day tour it was back onto the fast boat to Bali.

If you are looking to wet your appetite for Nusa Lembongan then a day trip is ideal; however, if you want a more immersive experience a stay for longer is highly recommended.
