Essential Items To Have In Your Carry-On Bag

One of the keys to having a good travel experience is to have everything that you need in your carry-on bag. Leaving key items at home can be inconvenient and expensive if you have to buy something you need at the airport. Make sure you pack the following essential items in your carry-on bag before going on your next vacation.

Headphones. The best way to block out noisy passengers whether on a plane, bus or train, is with headphones. Make sure that they can plug into your devices and preferably that they are noise cancelling.  If you have wireless headphones, you may need to bring an adapter for them to work with the in-flight entertainment system.  If you are on a budget, then consider ear plus.

Portable charger. One of the most commons things that passengers forget is their charger. They tend to leave their device on it up until they have to leave the house and then grab their phone or tablet and forget to take the charger with them. To help you remember your charger, put a sticky note on your device that reminds you to take it. We suggest more than just your charging wires.  Bring a portable charger/external battery.  Only a few airlines provide USB slots for charging your devices in-flight so you don’t want to rely on that.

Snacks. You don’t really want to shell out a lot of money every time you are hungry and just need something to hold you over until your next meal. Throw some snacks in your carry-on that travel well such as apples, granola bars and trail mix.

Water bottle. Bottles of water can cost you a serious amount of money while you are traveling. It’s a good idea to pack a reusable water bottle in your carry-on bag that you can fill up anytime you come across a water fountain or purchase a bottle and pour it in to keep it cold for a longer period of time.  We also like collapsible bottles brands such as Nomader’s, Anntrue or EXIT, so you can save space in your bag when it’s not in use.

One change of clothes. Unfortunately, luggage gets delayed. You don’t want to be caught having to wear the same clothes for a day or two because your luggage is lost. Make sure you pack a complete change of clothes with you, including extra underwear, into your carry-on just in case you find yourself at your destination without your luggage.

Glasses. If you only wear glasses to read then there’s a good chance that you will forget to pack them. Put them into your carry-on the night before you travel. That way not only will you ensure that you have them with you, but they will be a lot safer in your carry-on bag versus in a checked bag.

Sleep mask. You can combat sleeping issues no matter what time of day you will be traveling thanks to a sleep mask. They are small, lightweight and come in handy no matter where you are traveling too.

All Kinds of Wipes. There is a good chance that you will be touching a lot of things that others have and won’t always be near a sink to wash your hands. This is why it’s a good idea to pack sanitizing wipes (or hand sanitizer at the very least,) so that you can clean your hands quickly and easily.  We also strongly recommend flushable bathroom wipes.  Depending on where you are traveling, some bathrooms don’t have toilet paper and you don’t want to be caught by surprise. It’s also nice just to be able to freshen up during long trips.  I like Dude Wipes that are larger than the standard ones. You can also buy them individually wrapped so its easy to throw one in my pocket when I don’t want to bring a purse.

Moisturizer. Cabin air on an airplane can make your skin dry. A small bottle of moisturizer will last you a long time and help you combat dry skin.

Ziplock bags. The TSA requires that you put your liquids in a Ziplock bag. Throw a few extra bags into your carry-on just in case you are in need of a new one.

Medication. Traveling can be quite the headache, literally. This is why it’s important to not forget to thrown in a bottle of Tylenol or Advil into your carry-on bag. It doesn’t stop there though.  It goes without saying that you should also have your prescription medication in your carry on.  We suggesting using a small bottle and put a little bit of everything in there, as you never know if local foods will give you an upset stomach.  I recommend antacids, imodium AD or pepto, allergy medication such as benadryl, cold medicine and something for nausea such as dramamine.

Gum or breath freshener. Depending on how long it takes you to get to and from your destination, you may not be able to brush your teeth for a bit. Fortunately you don’t have to deal with bad breath if you pack gum or a breath freshener.

Pens. You never know when you will need to write something down. Don’t forget to pack several pens so that you don’t have to deal with trying to borrow one from others.

Book. An easy way to make the time pass quickly until you get to your destination is to pack a book. It should be fairly easy to read and of a genre that is of interest to you.

iPad or other entertainment. You will probably need some sort of entertainment to keep from getting board. Put your iPad into your carry-on bag with a variety of apps already downloaded for use. It’s also a good idea to pack a crossword puzzle or an adult coloring book just in case you decide that you want a break from technology for awhile.

Eye drops. Just like with your skin, your eyes can become dry when you are on an airplane. Eye drops can relieve this and get rid of red eyes from being up all night.

Socks or slippers. If you are on a long flight, especially an overnight one, you probably don’t want to be stuck in shoes the whole time. Put some socks or slippers into your carry-on bag so that you can take your shoes off, but don’t have to put your bare feet on the floor.

Neck pillow. It can be difficult to sleep when you are traveling. A neck pillow can offer you head some support and can easily fit into your carry-on.  Rather than the u-shaped neck pillow try the infinity pillow or the twist memory form pillow that allows for more adjustments to get comfortable.
