Rio de Janeiro is well-known for being one of the most vibrant, bustling cities in Brazil– and perhaps all of South America.  From famous natural wonders to the futuristic Museum of Tomorrow, here are the must-see sites in Rio de Janeiro. 

Christ the Redeemer
Standing high atop Corcovado Mountain, the colossal Christ the Redeemer statue looks out over the city of Rio de Janeiro.  This iconic landmark is one of Rio’s most popular tourist attractions and a must-see when in Rio de Janeiro.  For breathtaking views of Rio de Janeiro, you can reach the Christ the Redeemer statue by train, van ride, or hiking up the mountain trails.

Copacabana Beach
The famous Copacabana Beach is one of the best beaches in Rio de Janeiro and a must-see site in the city.  Copacabana Beach became internationally known in the 1960s as a haven for sun-worshipping jet-setters from all over the world.  With its long stretch of beach lined with bars, shops, and fancy hotels, as well as vendors selling all sorts of goods, the bustling Copacabana beach is a prime location for people-watching in Rio de Janiero. 

Museu do Amanhã (Museum of Tomorrow)
Built in anticipation for the tourism associated with the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, the Museum of Tomorrow is now the most popular museum in Rio de Janeiro and one of the best things to do in the city.  The futuristic science museum features impressive architecture, as well as interactive installations and exhibits dealing with the earth, climate, and sustainability.

Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain)
One of the must-see sites in Rio de Janeiro is the view of the city below from the top of Pão de Açúcar.  For beautiful vistas of Rio and its lush surroundings, visitors can take a cable car ride to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain.  If you are able to book a ticket for later in the day, the view is especially beautiful at sunset.

Vidigal
One of the safest favelas for tourists in Rio de Janeiro is the neighborhood of Vidigal.  With a thriving community and beautiful views of Leblon Beach, the favela of Vidigal has become a major tourist attraction in Rio for international visitors, with organized guided tour “hang outs” available where tourists can immerse themselves in the local culture.

Tijuca Forest
The largest urban forest in the world, Tijuca Forest is one of the best natural attractions in Rio de Janeiro.  The sprawling forest is home to a variety of plants and animals and within the forest there are several prominent landmarks worth visiting.  The Cachoeira do Horto waterfall is about a 15-minute hike inside the forest, while the Vista Chinesa is a pagoda with amazing views of Ipanema Beach and the surroundings.  Another must-see site in Rio de Janeiro is Parque Lage– a mansion turned public park located within the Tijuca forest.  With great views of the Christ the Redeemer in the background, as well as a massive aquarium and wild monkeys roaming freely, Parque Lage is one of the best locations for Instagram-worthy photo opportunities in Rio.
