The Wonderful Places to Visit on Your Tour of Turkey

A country that connects two continents, a land that has ancient influences from many parts of the world and one that boasts of some of the most recognizable and iconic buildings in the world- this is Turkey, in a nutshell. Travelling through Turkey is nothing short of magical and you’ll be spoilt for choice here. Here are some of the wonderful places to visit on your Turkey tours:

Cappadocia- If you’ve ever been fascinated by the curious rock formations you see in pictures from this country, this is the region to be in. The ‘fairy chimney’ rocks have put Cappadocia on the map. You’ll find these tall and conical rocks in Monks Valley, Goreme, and in a few other places. Survey the land as you journey through it in a hot air balloon. The sight of many balloons in flight is lovely too. This part of Turkey is also home to the Üçhisar Castle. Because it is situated on top of the highest land formation here, you will be treated to some spectacular sights when you get here on your Turkey tour. This hardy rock fortress is a volcanic rock outcrop and is dotted with tunnels. A few of the caves in Cappadocia now function as hotels too. The canyons here have churches with rock facades, and the Rose Valley- so named because of its pretty colours- is great if you’re in the mood for a hike. While in Cappadocia, do sample the local wine- the region is famous for it.

Istanbul- this major city in Turkey is often a person’s first introduction to the gorgeous land. It links Asia and Europe across the Bosporus Strait. People come to the city for many reasons, and one of the most important is the culture and its many influences. Indeed, Istanbul is a wonderful advertisement for the many different empires that had made Turkey home at some point or the other. From Egyptian obelisks to the Roman-era Hippodrome, you can find any number of connections to the past. While on your Turkey tour, you absolutely have to make a trip to the spectacular Hagia Sophia. This museum first started off as a Greek Orthodox Church, then became an imperial mosque during the time of the Ottomans, before it was made into a museum. The Hagia Sofia is known for its towering dome that dates back to the 6th century. It is a stunning example of Byzantine architecture. Go here to see rare Christian mosaics, purification urns and the Loggia of the Empress, among many other wonders.

Istanbul also has two other architectural marvels- The Sultan Ahmet Mosque, popularly known as the Blue Mosque, thanks to its blue hand-painted interior tiles. This mosque was completed 400 years ago. It is a sight to behold in the evenings and nights too, as the entire complex is lit up with blue lights.

Built somewhere in 1460, the Topkapı Palace should be the next stop on your Turkey tours. It was the official residence of the Ottoman sultans until the 19th century and is now a museum. There are three courtyards and many other rooms, including the harem. Go here to get a taste of royalty and feast your eyes on miniatures and portraits in the Gallery, the arms collections and the royal baths. Close by is the Grand Bazaar, an experience like no other!

Pamukkale- there’s no place quite like this anywhere else in the world. The waters here have minerals in them that give it its distinct colouring. Also called Hierapolis, this city boasts of thermal springs that date back to classical times. The shimmering white limestone is awe-inspiring. The pools are Travertine terraces and soothing to weary bones. Immerse yourself after a trip to the archaeological museum. You can find ancient monuments, including temples and fountains to admire here.

Resort Towns and Nightlife- if you’re in the mood to party, head out to any of the resort towns on your Turkey tours. For example, Alanya on the central Mediterranean coast not only has the castle but also some of the best beaches you can find. The legend goes that Cleopatra has swum here. There are quite a few bars and discos for your entertainment. Other places include, Kusadasi and its nearby ruins in Didyma and Ephesus, Bodrum, and Marmaris, on the Turquoise Coast.
