Top 5 Destinations on the Equator

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

When you visit a country that has the equator running through it, you get to do cool things in a hot climate. For example, you can put one foot in each hemisphere. In any case, you’ll get lots of sunshine, perhaps burn a little or get a dark tan, and you can explore the natural wonders that only exist in an equatorial place.

Giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and blue-footed boobies. Ecuador is home to the Galapagos Islands, one of history’s and science’s most important landmarks. This archipelago is where Darwin made his observations on natural selection and evolution, forever changing the way we view the world and ourselves. Taking a cruise and getting to see the place first hand is a dream for thousands of biologists all over the world.

Indonesia has hundreds of islands for visitors to explore. You’ll most likely fly into Jakarta and after spending a few days shopping and experiencing urban life, most people head to Bali. This beach destination is known for its great surfing, white sand, and lots of resorts. But there are other things to do in Indonesia besides beach bumming. Check out the Komodo National Park where Komodo dragons roam. Go scuba diving in Raja Ampat. Or head to East Java to check out Mt. Bromo and swim in volcanic crater lakes.

Kenya is known for producing the world’s best marathon runners. Scientists think that this has to do with the high altitude that most of these athletes train in. Their bodies use oxygen more efficiently, so during the New York marathon, when they’re at sea-level, finishing under 2 hours is easier. So, if you’re looking to up your running game, head to Kenya. Of course, there are also plenty of other things to do there, including hiking, national park tours, wild animal sightings, and swimming in some of its most beautiful waters.

The Maldives

Southwest of Sri Lanka lies the Maldives. What’s there to say about this tiny collection of islands? Clear, blue water? Check. Lush tropical jungles? Check. Getting as far away from everyone as possible? Totally possible there. Since it’s near the equator, you won’t need to worry about that pesky season called “winter.”

Colombia sits next to Ecuador in South America. While there are beautiful beaches and forests to explore, you might also want to do some shopping for emeralds. Aside from its strong coffee, Colombia is known for its emerald mines and trade. You can even go on an emerald tour or visit an emerald museum! Who knew.
