White House Blocks CDC’s Attempt to Extends Cruise No Sail Order Into 2021

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The CDC was prepared to announce an extension of the No Sail order through February 15, 2021. The order would have applied to any ships that carry more than 250 passengers sailing from the U.S. Reports state that the White House blocked the CDC’s recommendation and a compromise was made to extend the order through October 31, 2020.

The cruise industry has been deeply damaged as cruises have been unable to sail since March of this year. Of course, the White House is stating that this is not a political decision, but rather the fact that the cruise industry creates hundreds of thousands of jobs throughout the country and the industry needs to be able to resume.

There is still a lot of unknown, and the fact is that the No Sail order could be extended once again. There are also not clear guidelines as to what it will take for cruise ships to resume. “The hope is that in the next 30 days the cruise industry can demonstrate it has a plan to ensure ships can sail in a safe and responsible manner and that the companies assume the burden of dealing with any possible outbreaks,” said a task force member involved in today’s meeting. Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and NCL Cruises recently laid out a 65-page plan for the CDC to review. Click here to read the details of the plan. Cruise Line representatives are set to meet with the White House this Friday to describe their plans in more detail. A final determination will be made in the near future whether the no sail order should be extended past October 31, 2020.

The CDC has not responded with comments at this time.
