There is no doubt that going on safari in Africa is among the dreams of many travelers who want to come face to face with the most authentic nature. The mere possibility of going out to look for lions, leopards, elephants or rhinos to take pictures from a distance that you only thought possible in television documentaries is something that we could describe as exciting.

If you are thinking of making this special trip soon, we would like to be able to give you a series of recommendations or tips for doing a safari in Africa and making the experience optimal.

Some of the things that should be very obvious before embarking on a great adventure are what to do and what not to do, in which countries you will encounter the most spectacular safaris, what is the best time to go on a safari or how to distinguish a white rhino from a black one.

Alan Feldstein, the Founder and Chairman of Infinite Safari Adventures. He’s also professionally attributed as a photographer and holds keen interest in exploring places on earth with a knack for adventure.

Feldstein’s company, Infinite Safari Adventures is one of the leading companies that arrange safaris for tourists. Year-long, tourists flock to African parks which are swamped with majestic creatures, sometimes deadly and sometimes harmless but always exciting to watch and closely observe.

Tourists from around the world join the special arrangements made by Infinite Safari Adventures in custom tours they design for their clients. Today, we gain some really important insights on what to expect in one of the best African safaris:

The importance of choosing the place and time to go on a safari in Africa

Depending on the time of year and other factors, the best countries to do a safari are the classics of Kenya and Tanzania, in the east of the African continent and South Africa and Botswana in Southern Africa.

The savanna type of landscape of the Masai Mara or the Serengeti is ideal to see animals more easily, given the scarce vegetation of the same. Meanwhile in southern Africa, we have South Africa with the Kruger as its highest emblem or Botswana with the Okavango Delta, including Chobe National Park as the best natural resources (and less traveled).

We do not forget Namibia and the Etosha National Park and the great infrastructures of this country. On the other hand, Uganda, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Zambia or even Swaziland or Mozambique are countries to take into account also to make nature trips.

In the case of Uganda or Rwanda, there is also the attractive possibility of combining a regular safari with trekking to go out to look for the mountain gorillas in the Virunga Mountains, as well as to see chimpanzees in the wild, an extremely threatened species today.

In any case, it is advisable to turn to professionals who know how to identify the corners and moments in which to contemplate certain species. However, it is true that in South Africa, Botswana or Namibia there is a culture of “making your safari” by renting a vehicle and being the driver (see an example of higher than in other African countries. Even so, this last option is complex and quite risky.

Any time can be good to go on safari. There are only better and worse moments. It is generally common in different African countries that the dry season is usually the best to go on safari. Usually coinciding with July- October millions of animals flock to Kenya and Tanzania in the annual migration of wildebeest from the Serengeti and other Tanzanian parks.

Best times to see animals while on safari

Much of the fauna that populates the African natural parks is eminently nocturnal. Large predators go hunting at night and cannot stand the heat very well, reserving energy during the central hours of the day that they take advantage of to take a championship nap.

For this reason, the best times to see animals while on safari is very early in the morning and in the afternoon around sunset. As in life, much of the interesting happens at sunrise or sunset. And, above all, at night when we will hopefully hear the lions roar if we stay inside the parks or nature reserves.

Patience, silence, reverence and common sense in a safari: critical virtues

Anyone who thinks that in African natural parks you see animals likes in a zoo better not even bother to buy your plane ticket. They will let us see what they want, a lot, little or regular, fortune being a vital factor in our experience.

If we’ve been half an hour and we have not seen more than a herd of impala, it’s easy to arm yourself with patience. We can have a little prolific morning with animals, and we can experience a performance in two minutes that is not even featured in National Geographic documentaries.

We are in the middle of nature, and there are no set schedules or places, but with their valuable experience and collaboration with other staff in the park or reserve where we are the expert, guides will often try to make things easier for us.

Therefore, understanding who you go on safari with is best because if it is with people who know, the chances of seeing wildlife scenes in the wild would be much greater. The main thing is not to despair. Adventure strikes when we least expect it.
