Two of the Travel Industry’s Biggest Reports Just Agreed on What 2027 Looks Like. Here Is What They Found.
Something unusual happened in the travel industry at the start of October, and it says a lot about travel trends in 2027.
Two of the world’s most respected travel organizations released their annual trend forecasts within 24 hours of each other. Each draws on thousands of advisors across dozens of countries. One is the inaugural Travel Trend Watch from a major U.S. travel agency consortium, built from its own network of agencies and preferred partners. The other is the annual Virtuoso Luxe Report, drawing on more than 3,100 advisors in more than 50 countries.
They reached strikingly similar conclusions about travel trends in 2027.
These are two competing networks, each with billions of dollars in annual travel sales and no reason to coordinate. When they arrive at the same story independently, that story deserves attention. In 38 years of watching this industry, I can tell you that kind of convergence does not happen by accident.
Here is what both reports found, what the overlap means, and how to use it to plan your travel in 2027.
The Headline Both Reports Agree On: Intentional Travel Has Replaced Aspirational Travel
The most consistent thread across both reports is a fundamental shift in what travelers are actually buying.
The consortium report describes a “decisive shift away from traditional luxury markers toward personalized, access-led journeys.” It also notes that what was once a premium enhancement has become a fundamental expectation. The Virtuoso report says the same thing from a different angle: luxury travelers are changing destinations, not their standards. Clients will switch countries to get better value, but they hold on to the suite, the private guide, and the hard-to-get dinner reservation.
Translated into plain language: travelers are no longer buying the brand-name hotel or the famous itinerary as a status signal. They are buying the specific experience that is difficult to replicate and impossible to get without knowing the right people. The luxury product has become secondary to the luxury access.
After 38 years of building trips, I can tell you this shift has been coming for a long time. The clients I see coming in now have often done the conventional version of a destination already. They are not looking for the Eiffel Tower. They want private after-hours access to something extraordinary. They want the small boat on the river at dawn, before the tourists arrive, or the local family’s table that no guidebook has found yet. Both reports are confirming at scale what I have been seeing in individual client conversations for years.
Travel Trends 2027: Where Both Reports Agree
The degree of alignment between these two reports on specific trends is remarkable. Here is where they converge.
1. Multigenerational travel is the dominant family story
The Virtuoso report ranked multigenerational travel as the number one overall travel trend, its third consecutive year of climbing the rankings. The consortium report sees the same families in its fastest-growing categories. Travelers across generations are seeking more immersive ways to experience remote destinations, wildlife, and culture. Families are using travel as the organizing event that brings multiple generations together, and grandparents are increasingly the ones planning and paying.
In practice, itineraries designed for three generations are in higher demand than ever. Family bookings are concentrating in destinations that work across that age spread, such as Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and river cruising through Europe.
2. Expedition cruising is having its moment
The consortium’s own booking data shows expedition cruise sales up 24% in 2026 compared to 2025, with 2027 already tracking in double-digit growth. The Virtuoso report independently ranks expedition cruising as the number three overall travel trend. Antarctica, the Galapagos, Iceland, the Arctic, and the Norwegian fjords are drawing travelers who have moved past the conventional cruise. They want something that cannot be done any other way. (For a deeper look, see our guide to cruises vs. expeditions.)
Virtuoso coined the term “Gen-XYZ-peditions” to describe the convergence of multigenerational travel and expedition cruising. A family spanning three generations booking an Antarctica expedition together is no longer a niche scenario. It is a meaningful and growing segment.
3. River cruising is expanding faster than most people realize
The consortium’s numbers here are specific and striking: international river cruise bookings are up 17% for 2027 departures, and U.S. domestic river cruising is up 40% for 2027. In the Virtuoso report, the Danube ranks number five among all cruise itineraries and the Rhine number nine. The Nile makes its debut on the list. The consortium also projects the global river cruise market to grow from roughly $2 billion today to about $5 billion by 2035.
The supply side is responding. Celebrity Cruises is entering river cruising, Trafalgar has launched river cruises, Uniworld is expanding, and AmaWaterways continues to add ships.
4. Luxury is bifurcating at the top
Both reports show that the premium traveler is not trading down. The consortium data shows luxury independent travel and luxury guided tours combined pacing 23% ahead of 2026. In the Virtuoso report, 59% of advisors predict at least a modest increase in spending per trip, and 13% forecast a significant jump. In addition, 47% say ultra-luxury travel is on the rise, defined increasingly by all-inclusive experiences and privacy rather than brand recognition.
The traveler who can go anywhere is not going to the same places for less. They are going to more specific places for more money, in exchange for access and experiences that cannot be bought in bulk.
5. Booking windows have split in two
Both reports document the same paradox. Travelers are booking further ahead than ever at the premium end, and more last-minute than ever at the flexible end. Since 2024, the consortium’s average expedition cruise booking window has stretched from 11.3 months to 14.4 months. Guided tours, meanwhile, are booked an average of more than nine months in advance. At the same time, the 30 to 90 day decision window is growing for more flexible travelers.
The practical implication is simple. The inventory that defines a great trip goes to the long-planners first: the right cabin on the right sailing, the peak-season Japan itinerary, the Antarctica departure with the operator you want. Short-planners choose from what remains.
Where the Reports Differ: Destinations vs. Behavior
The two reports complement each other because they ask slightly different questions.
The Virtuoso report is destination-specific and gives the clearest picture of where travelers want to go. Japan overtook Italy as the top global destination for the first time in the report’s history. Greece replaced Italy as the top honeymoon destination. China debuted as the number one destination on the rise. For cruises, the Mediterranean tops the itinerary list, with Alaska second and the Greek Isles third.
The consortium report is about behavior and categories, showing how people are booking inside a major travel agency network. Its expedition, river, and luxury numbers come from real booking activity, not survey responses about intentions. As a result, they are a different and complementary kind of evidence.
Together they show both where and how the most sophisticated travelers are moving in 2027.
What This Means If You Are Planning a Trip in 2027
Japan rewards early planning more than almost any other destination right now. The most coveted ryokans during cherry blossom season and autumn foliage book nine to twelve months out. Now that Japan is the top destination in the industry’s largest advisor survey, competition for that inventory is significant.
Expedition cruising is filling fastest at the quality end. The ships that do Antarctica, the Arctic, and the Galapagos properly have limited capacity by design. Double-digit growth means more demand competing for the same high-quality ships.
Multigenerational trips need more lead time. Coordinating schedules across three generations is complex. If your family has been talking about a once-in-a-lifetime trip together, you are not alone, and the most popular family destinations are filling accordingly. Our guide to multigenerational family cruising is a good place to start.
River cruise inventory for 2027 is moving. The 17% growth in international river bookings is a real market signal. Peak-season departures on the Rhine, Danube, and Douro are not waiting.
Greece is the honeymoon pick of the moment. If that is where you have been dreaming of going, plan carefully. The quieter islands and the right timing are what separate the Greece of your imagination from the Greece that filled up in July.
The Bigger Picture
What strikes me most about reading these reports together is not any single finding. It is the consistency of the underlying direction.
Travel is becoming more intentional, more personal, and more experience-driven across every category that matters. The travelers who get the trips that transform them are the ones who are clear about what they want, who plan early enough to have real choices, and who work with advisors who can turn intention into an actual itinerary.
That is the business I have been in for 38 years. And based on two independent reports released a day apart, it is exactly what the most sophisticated travelers in the world are increasingly looking for.

Travel Trends 2027: Frequently Asked Questions
Two major industry reports released in fall 2026 agree on five: multigenerational family travel, expedition cruising, fast-growing river cruising, continued strength in luxury travel, and booking windows splitting between early planners and last-minute travelers. Underneath all of them is a shift toward personal, access-driven experiences.
Japan. The 2027 Virtuoso Luxe Report, based on more than 3,100 travel advisors, ranks Japan as the top global destination for the first time, ahead of Italy. Greece is now the top honeymoon destination, and China is the number one destination on the rise.
For expedition cruises, peak-season Japan, popular river cruise dates, and multigenerational trips, start 9 to 14 months out. Expedition cruise booking windows now average more than 14 months, and guided tours are booked more than nine months ahead on average.
Please note: event dates, ticket prices, ship assignments, and seasonal offerings change from year to year and can sell out or be updated without notice.
