Illinois Senate Race Election Primary 2010; Democrats Looking To Pick Up GOP Seats
Chicago, Il – This Tuesday begins the Senate primary elections for the Illinois 2010 Mid Term elections. Democrats are eyeing seats currently held by the GOP.
Twenty years ago, it was hard to recruit +Democrats+ to run for office in Illinois’ +10th+ Congressional District, a mixture of upscale and working-class communities north of Chicago. But now +Democrats+ have a list of reasons to hope they can finally capture the seat.
For one, it’s an open seat, the only one in Illinois this year. The incumbent, Republican Mark Kirk, gave up a shot at a sixth term to run for President Barack Obama’s old Senate seat instead.
Kirk leaves behind mixed feelings among voters. Some of them applaud his moderate views on social issues. Others argue that he was never a true Republican, or they object to his recent shift to the right as he runs statewide.
The district also has been trending Democratic, both because of an influx of young families from Chicago and party momentum.
Tuesday’s primary will select the candidates for what promises to be a major political battle in the fall. With Republicans hoping to make a big dent in the Democratic majority in Congress, both parties are paying close attention. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has even named it one of the 20 most closely watched seats in the country.
