Is Condi Rice staging a comeback?

Is Condoleezza Rice staging a comeback to the political world? The former Secretary of State recently made a series of appearances that have observers wondering if she may be eyeing a return to Washington.

In Washington DC, Condi was the featured speaker at the National Republican Congressional Committee’s annual fundraising dinner. This event raised over $15 million for the party. It is the largest fundraising event of the year for the GOP. Headline speakers at this event are usually front-running contenders for the Oval Office.

After leaving the State Department at the end of the George W. Bush administration, Rice avoided politics for several years.

Condoleezza Rice remains one of the most popular women, and African-Americans in the Republican Party. She is in high demand among conservative groups as a speaker.

Georgia Godfrey, Rice’s chief of staff, said, “She’s very concerned with where the party is going, where the country is going, and that’s why you’re seeing her engaging. What she’s going to do this cycle is really support the party, help empower leadership and help the party win back Congress.” (1)

A battle for the future of the Republican Party is brewing, as libertarian-leaning and TEA Party candidates battle against the old guard. Political journalists are starting to question whether this struggle for identity in the GOP may be the reason for Condi’s return.

Rice recently appeared at a fundraising dinner for Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, helping him against his TEA Party rival, Matt Bevin.

The other senator from Kentucky, Rand Paul, is likely to lead the libertarian wing of the party in 2016. He recently became the first candidate from the GOP to build a campaign network in all 50 states.

Rice is not likely to run for the White House in two years.

Former Bush press secretary Ari Fleischer said, “I do not think she is running for president. She is not. She is being very helpful to the cause as she always has been.” (2)

At the closed-door dinner in the nation’s capital, Rice encouraged a foreign policy of increased intervention in world affairs. She also supported greater immigration control at the nation’s borders. Both of these positions put her at odds with Paul.
