What’s the Truth Behind the Russia Ukraine War?

When the Russian-Ukraine war first started, I began to notice people were taking sides. Overnight I saw the Ukraine flag everywhere online and in the media, everybody was rah, rah Ukraine. It seemed they were siding with Ukraine impulsively. I remember thinking, I have to step back because I really don’t know what this war is about and I don’t want to make any judgments either way.

I could see the media doing what they do best, gin up hate against the side of the Russians. I wondered just how many of these people who were taking the side of Ukraine knew anything about the country, their history, and relationship to Russia. They all seemed to just jump on the media bandwagon—they were taking their cues from the press.

I recently came across some videos that clearly explain the Russia Ukraine war—Dr. James Garrison of Ubiquity University does a great job explaining the Russia-Ukraine history and why we are where we are today.

I interviewed Dr. Garrison and he told me that he worked closely with Mikhail Gorbachev.

“Yes, it all starts basically 30 plus years ago in the 1980s when Gorbachev came to power. At that time, the Soviet Union and the United States were loggerheads. They were threatening each other with nuclear weapons. And Mr. Gorbachev said to President Reagan, Maggie Thatcher, and Helmut Kohl, that ‘this is ridiculous. This is the 20th century. We should not be having international relations based on mutual assured destruction.’ So his proposal was that we leave the Cold War behind…the one condition was that NATO would not move to the east. And Jim Baker, in his very famous statement, said that, ‘yes, to go to this next level, the NATO alliance would not move one inch to the east.’”

Roadway to Peace?

Garrison said that based on that agreement, Gorbachev withdrew all the troops from Eastern Europe and from Germany and actively encouraged the Eastern Europeans to begin to develop their sovereignty.

Fast-forward, the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Garrison indicated that during this time, “rather than honoring that agreement, the neoconservatives in the United States, when the Soviet Union began to collapse, said, ‘Aha, this is our moment. We don’t want to have peace with Russia. We want to break Russia up, and we want to move NATO to the east.’ … because the Soviet Union had broken up, Russia was very weak, and there was nothing that Boris Yeltsin could do between 1992 and the year 2000…he left office in disgrace, because he was corrupt, he was an alcoholic, and he allowed the oligarchs to kind of savage the country.”

Garrison gives a very clear history from the fall of the Soviet Union through today. He discusses how Bill Clinton started to move NATO to the east, and then Putin came into office and one of the first things he did was call Bill Clinton and said, “We should be friends. We’re not communist anymore.” Of course, Clinton said no.

Putin wanted to join NATO, but as Garrison explains, the Americans had a strategy to break up Russia and move NATO to the east.

After the Clinton Administration, Garrison explains how the U.S. and NATO have continued to agitate Russia from the George W. Bush and Barak Obama administrations, through now during the Biden administration.

It is evident in the video that this has not been a left or right political issue as both sides no matter which is in office seems to have continued with the strategy to lock out Russia, and Garrison discussed this in our interview. 

He said, “The Russians have never wanted war, not from the beginning. Who wants to take on the United States? It’s crazy. And now that the Russians are no longer communist, they’re capitalists.”

He stated that Putin said up until December of 2021, that he wanted to work things out, “…a mutual security arrangement within the context of which Ukraine and Russia can be interactive with the west and with the United States. And the Americans said no.”

Garrison made the statement that this is a “classic proxy war; just like in Vietnam, just Afghanistan, just Iraq.”

Same Formula, Different Game

I don’t want to let the press off the hook. I studied journalism and I can’t tell you how disgusted I am with mainstream media, because they have to gin up hate against whatever group. They need to get the American people on board with this war so they demonize a group to get the peoples’ support. They do it in our own country, so it only makes sense they would do it on an international stage.

Once you first see this strategy, you can spot it when they use it again—because they use the same formulas over and over.

During the interview Garrison admitted, “…the CIA bragged even back in the 1960s and the 70s how they completely control the U.S. media. So that’s why with Ukraine, you get the same information across the mainstream media…most of the information that’s giving you the truth is coming from shows like yours. Not CNN, not Fox, not MSNBC, not BBC, not French TV or German TV. They’re all giving the same party line … it happens over and over and over again. A country is set up as the enemy, and all of a sudden, you hear that he’s a tyrant. He’s like Hitler, he massacres people. It’s the same playbook over and over again. And because the public sees it coming in from all the media, they believe it to be true. And it’s just like right now in Ukraine, not a single outlet in the United States or east or western Europe is saying what I just said, that the Russians have won. Ukraine is in the process of collapse because they want to keep the war machine going. But at some point soon, maybe within the next 30 to 60 days, it’s going to dawn on the media and the general public that Joe Biden has led us into a complete debacle.”

According to Garrison, “Vladimir Putin is the smartest statesman I know. He built Russia from ashes into what Russia has become. He took on the United States and NATO, protecting Russian territory with Crimea and beat them. And now is working with China and India, he’s taking out the U.S. dollar. I’ve said this for years. Putin’s the smartest. Putin is the only adult in the room, and he’s going to take us out, and that’s exactly what he’s doing. And Joe Biden is too brain dead to figure it out. It’s a travesty. What is being done in the name of the United States by the president of the United States—he’s completely detached from reality.”
