Oaxaca — Eight people were arrested by the Mexican Navy after they spotted a suspicious vessel in the waters off the coast of Oaxaca. One of the eight arrested was a Canadian.
Marinos of the Mexican Navy have arrested a total of eight people after chasing a small vessel with the help of four other boats and two helicopters. The water chase took place off the coast of Oaxaca when members of the navy were conducting routine surveillance.
A vessel was seen by an aircraft of the Mexican Navy approximately 150 nautical miles (278 kilometers) southwest of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca. From the air using nighttime vision equipment, they saw a suspicious vessel with two high-powered outboard motors and covered cargo.
Four ships were sent in their direction while two maritime patrol aircraft kept track of the small boat. Marine Corps personnel intercepted the vessel which is when they found the eight men and two tons of cocaine.
When navy personnel inspected the boat, they found 2,250 kilos of cocaine and eight people, one Canadian, three Colombians and four Mexicans. The two-ton drug bust was most recent off the Pacific coast of Mexico.
In August, after an intense water chase off the coast of Cuajinicuilapa, Guerrero the Navy of Mexico seized a two-ton shipment of cocaine.
