2019 marks 51 years since in 1968 I added my name to the then microscopic membership list of Colin Jordan’s British Movement. I had little idea of the great times, amazing experiences, comradeships formed and challenges we would face. But, I hoped for them and was never left disappointed. What followed was a white knuckle ride, it still is and not a moment regretted, not even whilst I was in Her Majesty’s prison.

Of course, there was no George Soros or government funding for us ~ and to be honest we had no well-heeled suitors. Our Movement was not only the working class, but it was also the unemployed class. However, in the spirit of real socialism, we leafleted, marched, fought in street battles in worn-out clothing. In all weathers, we pushed leaflets through doors till her fingers bore the scars. Many paid for those fliers with their dole money.

In fairness, we also earned the grudging respect of many Socialist Workers Party activists, who ignored their leadership’s warning to avoid contamination. Bill Prince, a Socialist Workers Party firebrand, pledged allegiance to me.

Funding came from the already hard-pressed; many were fundraising events and initiatives. We travelled the country, even to Europe to Spain, Italy, and France, America too, to campaign, attend rallies or stay at ethnic-nationalist camps.

Taking an example from others before me I was entrepreneurial. I estimate that 80% of the funds necessary for wages, overheads, travel, cost of living, rents, and utilities etc. came from book sales and sales of cassette tape recordings.

We re-printed and published book titles which when sold helped the housekeeping budget enormously. These were hand-printed on a second-hand Gestetner duplicator and completed by a stapler bought at office suppliers. Our knees buckled under the weight of sacks of mail taken to the local Post Office.

We all pitched in, the Leader, his wife, ordinary members, the British Movement Leader Guard sent stalwarts 200 miles up to head office in North Wales to help out. Some stayed for weeks at a time.

Many of the books we sold were purchased from conventional publishers, whose stock included useful political activism or historical titles. Many were purchased from American book printers. We lived hand-to-mouth but we lived and we fought because we showed entrepreneurial and fighting spirit.

Technology and the internet, which should have completed our revolution, ripped the heart out of our Movement and that of the National Front, British National Party, and others. Without the winds of change, the movement’s sales deflated and becalmed lost headway.

Instead of pulling on their boots the young today pull their seats up to their laptops. Dubbed ‘keyboard commandoes’ they spend hours ‘liking’ memes.

Today’s generation makes much more money than did their counterparts in the 1960s and 1970s. But transferring even a modest tithe horrifies them as much as mounting the podium at Brick Lane or Trafalgar Square. Given ample opportunity to help out and add to their income by selling-on popular book titles cause bewilderment. Any regrets, for the past no.
