Shout “White Supremacist,” Shut Down a Cafe

These days, almost anyone might be accused of being a “white supremacist” — even a cafe owner in trendy Williamsburg, Brooklyn:

The Sands Cafe on Grand Street went dark a day after blogger Colin Hagendorf tweeted that Guy Sands, 32, is a “Proud Boy” and “used to have an active alt-right twitter, but nuked it before opening this sh-tty restaurant.”

That’s all it takes to start the liberal mob on fire, destroy someone’s business, and ruin his livelihood. The accused white supremacist had to shut down his restaurant due to “organized threats.”

Sands is in fact a registered Republican, so claiming to be innocent would be absurd. Nonetheless,

“I do not associate or identify with these groups in any way,” Sands wrote in an email to Eater. “Sands welcomes everybody.”

But not everybody welcomes Sands — not in light of the seriousness of the allegation.

The Sands Cafe had been getting positive reviews on Yelp since opening on September 1. But that was before everyone knew that the owner is a white supremacist or at the very least a Republican.

Anyone tempted to stand up for Sands should bear in mind that those who defend accused white supremacists may find themselves accused of white supremacy.

Asking what exactly the term “white supremacy” means might also get you trouble. That question could give the impression that you do not grasp how crucial it is that Caucasians who don’t self-righteously despise themselves be identified, marginalized, and then smashed.
