School Bus Evacuated on Main Street

Macon County School Bus #33 was enroute to Iotla Valley Elementary School yesterday afternoon when it was evacuated after a student punctured another student’s tablet, resulting in a brief fire as the battery exploded and the bus was filled with smoke. One student suffered a minor burn to his arm. Students were quickly loaded onto another bus and continued to their destination. Franklin Fire Department, Franklin Police Department, and Macon County EMS responded to this call.

A Press Release from the Macon County School System was sent out after 4 pm:

This afternoon, Bus #33 was traveling from Mountain View Intermediate School to Iotla Valley Elementary School. A student on the bus punctured the end of another student’s Samsung tablet resulting in the tablet catching fire. The bus driver stopped the bus and evacuated the bus. One student was injured and is currently being evaluated by EMS. All other students were placed on a substitute bus and the route was restarted. Iotla Valley buses will be running behind this afternoon.

Outlook

Broad high pressure will persist over the region through the rest of the week, limiting daily shower and thunderstorm activity and keeping temperatures well above normal. The ridge of high pressure will strengthen over the weekend, resulting in near-record high temperatures each day.
