For the most woke feminists, January is the month to increase awareness of the terror of oppressive gender norms.

Women, rage against the system: Stink, belch, fart, throw away your makeup, and…grow out your beautiful armpit hair!

BEEE-A-UUUTIFUL.

Now that’s a real woman! D*mn right!

People Magazine reported on “Januhairy”:

Similar to the [November campaign “Movember”], which encourages men to grow mustaches to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide, Januhairy is a new annual event targeted to women.
Januhairy encourages women to embrace their body hair by growing it out throughout the month. This new craze was started by Laura Jackson, a drama student at the University of Exeter in the U.K. after she noticed a difference in how she felt when she grew out her body hair for a role.

She’s encouraging others to support the movement and the cause associated with it. Jackson created a Crowdfunding page to support the body-positive organization, Body Gossip, which empowers every body to be the best version of themselves through Arts and Education. Her goal is to raise 1,000 pounds and she’s three-quarters of a way to her goal (739 pounds have already been raised).

Hi I’m Laura, the gal behind Januhairy! I thought I would write a little about my experiences and how Januhairy came about… I grew out my body hair for a performance as part of my drama degree in May 2018. There had been some parts that were challenging for me, and others that really opened my eyes to the taboo of body hair on a woman. After a few weeks of getting used to it, I started to like my natural hair. I also started to like the lack of uncomfortable episodes of shaving. Though I felt liberated and more confident in myself, some people around me didn’t understand why I didn’t shave/didn’t agree with it. I realised that there is still so much more for us to do to be able to accept one another fully and truly. Then I thought of Januhairy and thought I would try it out. It’s a start at least . . . I have had a lot of support from my friends and family! Even though I had to explain why I was doing it to a lot of them which was surprising, and again, the reason why this is important to do! When I first started growing my body hair my mum asked me “Is it you just being lazy or are you trying to prove a point?” . . . why should we be called lazy if we don’t want to shave? And why do we have to be proving a point? After talking to her about it and helping her understand, she saw how weird it was that she asked those questions. If we do something/see the same things, over and over again it becomes normal. She is now going to join in with Januhairy and grow out her own body hair which is a big challenge for her as well as many women who are getting involved. Of course a good challenge! This isn’t an angry campaign for people who don’t see how normal body hair is, but more an empowering project for everyone to understand more about their views on themselves and others. This picture was taken a few months ago. Now I am joining in with Januhairy, starting the growing process again along with the other wonderful women who have signed up! So it’s great, right? Well, the goalpost of Social Justice War is always in motion. And as it turns out, the hairy chicks are the cretins: According to feminist site Jezebel, all these honkies growing out their pitbushes are actually endorsing white supremacy.

Writer Prachi Gupta schools the world:

Let’s please keep it in perspective: a white woman discovering and promoting the wonders of not shaving her pits, in the dead cold of winter, when we shave the least anyway, is not a particularly brave stance.

It isn’t? That isn’t bravery in 2019?? She says nope.

Right — pretty white women are “often celebrated” for their “long, silky strands” of pit hair. Sorry — back to Prachi. Let’s start that again:

So honor someone presenting as the opposite sex, if they have a giant underarm mane. This is how we possess virtue in the modern age. Take THAT, GI Generation!

Because:

While white women are liberating their pits, brown people, who have darker, and oftentimes coarser, thicker hair (in more places), are contending with colonialist expectations of what their bodies, and hair, are supposed to look like.

For brown people of all genders, the choice to not conform to society’s expectations of how to treat their dark hair are not met with such celebration, nor are they decided upon so casually. In 2012, Reddit attempted to shame Sikh woman Balpreet Kaur by a posting her photo of her (taken without her consent) online (she righteously schooled Reddit about the sanctity of the human body and why she doesn’t have time for your bullshit.) Gender non-conforming artist and writer Alok V. Menon has talked about facing death threats simply for daring to post a photo of them in a bathing suit.

for the past week i have been receiving non-stop rape threats, death threats, been ridiculed & demeaned, called a monkey & monster, told i have a disorder & need to be exterminated…simply for posting a photo of myself in a swim suit. several memes have been made out of my image: there is something so degrading about an empowering image of yourself getting repurposed to humiliate you. it’s like getting spat on in your favorite outfit: the extremities of joy & the enormity of pain. this harassment is coming from both men & women, many of whom are south asian like me. they tag each other to make fun of each other: this is your boyfriend, this is your girlfriend, this is you. essentially: they use me to become. become desirable, become straight, become humorous, become men & become women. i am familiar with this encounter: being extracted from to create the norm and then subsequently being disavowed from it. being foundational to everything & then being erased from it. in times like these i want to disappear – delete the social media accounts that profit off of me but do not protect me, protect my art & my image & my creativity from a world which punishes me for it. but then i remember that is precisely what they want me to do: erase myself so they can maintain the fiction not only of their relevance, but themselves. it’s another unremarkable remarkable day of enduring the vitriol of transmisogyny. it is spectacularly ordinary & ordinarily spectacular. today i am here to tell the story of it, to say “this happens to people like me every day.” to ask: “what are you doing to stop it?” and perhaps: “how are you engendering it?”
