BANNED: San Antonio City Council Says Chick-Fil-A Not Welcome at Airport After Think Progress Report

Here we go again.

After a report published by the liberal website Think Progress earlier this week on Chick-fil-A’s 2017 donations, the fast food restaurant chain has effectively been banned from the San Antonio airport thanks to the city council.

Fox News reports:

On Thursday, six members of the San Antonio City Council rejected the inclusion of Chick-fil-A from the new Food, Beverage and Retail Prime Concession Agreement for the airport, KTSA reports. The seven-year contract for concession management at the terminal is expected to create $2.1 million in revenue for the Texas city; the motion that passed gave the green light to food shops including Smoke Shack and Local Coffee.

“With this decision, the City Council reaffirmed the work our city has done to become a champion of equality and inclusion,” Councilman Roberto Treviño said of the vote, as per News 4 San Antonio. “San Antonio is a city full of compassion, and we do not have room in our public facilities for a business with a legacy of anti-LGBTQ behavior.”

“Everyone has a place here, and everyone should feel welcome when they walk through our airport,” he continued.

Councilman Treviño is the person who led the effort against Chick-fil-A after Think Progress reported their findings.

We’ve seen efforts in the past from social justice warrior snowflakes at colleges across America push to ban Chick-fil-A from their campuses. But when these types of bans come from elected officials, they are much more chilling. This is government discrimination based on the political and religious viewpoints of a business owner.

Legal experts and even some liberals have spoken out in the past when Democrat politicians advocated doing this to Chick-fil-A:

The proposed bans in Boston and Chicago drew criticism from some liberal pundits, legal experts, and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Kevin Drum of Mother Jones magazine said “[T]here’s really no excuse for Emanuel’s and Menino’s actions… you don’t hand out business licenses based on whether you agree with the political views of the executives. Not in America, anyway … what makes this whole situation so weird is that Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy has always opposed gay marriage. He’s a devout Southern Baptist, just like his father, who founded the company. The place is closed on Sundays, for crying out loud. There’s just nothing new here.”[40]

UCLA law professor and blogger Eugene Volokh observed, “[D]enying a private business permits because of such speech by its owner is a blatant First Amendment violation.”[41]

Echoing those views were Glenn Greenwald of Salon, professor John Turley of The George Washington University Law School, Adam Schwartz, a senior attorney with the ACLU, and Michael C. Dorf, the Robert S. Stevens Professor of Law at Cornell University Law School.[42]/[43]

I’d also like to mention the fact that in most national and local mainstream media reports about the Think Progress piece failed to mention is the fact that they’re a liberal group funded by progressive organizations. Isn’t that worthy of noting in their reporting?
