Now, Europe’s leading hard-right parties have announced an alliance that they say will become the biggest force in the European parliament, curbing the nightmare of federalism and blocking migration.

“We’re working for a new European dream. Today for many citizens and peoples, the European Union represents a nightmare,” said Matteo Salvini, 46, the Italian deputy prime minister, who took the stage in Milan at a press conference yesterday with Jörg Meuthen, 57, chairman of the far-right Alternative for Germany party (AfD).

“We want to build a fortress in Europe,” said Mr. Meuthen, who said that Mr. Salvini, who is leading the alliance, would make a perfect president of the European Commission after European parliamentary elections in May.
