The New York Review of Books for February 7, 2019 has a review (titled as my heading, above) by author Malise Ruthven of a new book by Robert Irwin, Ibn Khaldun: An Intellectual Biography [Princeton University Press, $29.95].
Ibn Khaldun was a Fourteenth Century “polymath” whose writings, Muqaddima and Kitab al-ʿibar (The Book of Warnings), have been lauded, Ruthven tells readers by historians Arnold Toynbee (The Muqaddima “ … undoubtedly the greatest work of its kind that has ever been created by any mind in any time or place.”) and Hugh Trevor-Roper (“ … subtle deep and formless as the Ocean”).
Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg recommended the Muqaddima on his Facebook page.
And Ruthven tells readers that author Irwin “caustically remarks, ‘If you tried to read everything about that has been written about Ibn Khaldun, you would die before you could finish the job.’”
And “When I read the Muqaddima, I have the sense that I am encountering a visitor from another planet.”
Literature inspired by Ibn Khaldun, Irwin reports, includes Frank Herbert’s Dune and Isaac Asimov’s Foundation trilogy.
Irwin eschews trying to drag Ibn Khaldun into the modern era by highlighting “the eventful story of his life, his religiosity and his interest in occultism” reviewer Ruthven notes.
Quoting from Irwin’s Preface, Ruthven informs readers that Irwin avoids the tendency of moderns to try and link Ibn Khaldun to “such Western thinkers as Machiavelli, Hobbes, Montesquieu, Vico, Marx, Weber, and Durkheim” and even Darwin.
Irwin’s book is a must read, as an introduction to Ibn Khaldun, and his great work(s).
