“Originally it was Paracelsus who presented the idea of the unconscious. Mesmer discovered that in altered states one could heal diseases. … This led Freud to the idea that symptoms might be caused by internal unconscious forces, so he explored the unconscious through hypnosis … ” [From Google search]
Using hypnosis to recall memory or event material in UFO sightings or alien abduction tales is pretty much a thing out of favor, certainly for cognoscenti.
Psychoanalysis and “Freud eventually abandoned hypnosis as a clinical technique, both because of its fallibility and because he found that patients could recover and comprehend crucial memories while conscious.”
A new book, Death by Suggestion, Editor Donald K. Hartman, was reviewed, In Brief, in the TLS (Times Literary Supplement) for January 18, 2019 by Emelyne Godfrey.
Reviewer Godfrey writes that the book is “a mélange of crime fiction featuring [crimes]” in which the Editor explores the history of hypnotism [aka mesmerism, after a noted practitioner, Franz Mesmer, who had a theory about animal magnetism]:
Ms. Godfrey inserts a one sentence reference of an actual occurrence that I thought fascinating:
“ … Robert Simpson, who was hypnotized on a New Jersey stage in 1909 by ‘Professor’ Arthur Everton … never regained consciousness.”
When I was in high school, many years ago, we had an assembly in which a hypnotist performed many hypnotic acts, including one that asked for volunteers from the student audience.
Eight kids, two from my class, were hustled on stage, and the hypnotist put them in an hypnotic state.
After a few tricks, indicating that the students were, indeed, hypnotized, the hypnotist told them that they were seeing some flying saucers about to land.
The students went into a frenzy, running in various directions, some jumping off the stage and all cowering in great fear and panic.
The assembly was halted, and I don’t think the school ever scheduled another hypnotist for an assembly.
Hypnotism is discounted as a reliable tool to dredge up memories, for any purpose.
I can’t imagine any legitimate UFO researcher using the technique today.
Since one of the problems with hypnotically produced recall is flawed, containing an admixture of mental materials from any time or place – some imagined, some real – I think that UFO abduction events (stories) can be set aside as unreliable when it comes to reality.
The same for UFO sightings recalled by hypnotism.
Ms. Godfrey concludes her review with a précis of story by Ambrose Bierce that is quite horrible, nasty.
