The History and Practice of Magic by Paul Christian (1811-1877) translated by James Kirkup and Julian Shaw [The Citadel Press, NY, 1963].
This book is a Two Volume edition of the Seven Books of the classic anthology of magical practices and the occult by Paul Christian, a Nineteenth Century French savant, aka Jean Baptiste or Christian Pitois.
The “guide” is a boon to ghost hunters and those seeking access to the paranormal, using arcane methods or practices.
I, along with a few others, have indulged in some of the procedures to produce entrée to things paranormal, and they’ve worked, once in a malevolent way.
For ghost hunters, let this be a suggestion for Paul Kimball and his cohorts:
“ … communications of the living with the dead were obtained in polytheistic religions through the sacrifice of animals. A square grave was dug in which first three libations had to be pored, one of milk and honey, the second of pure wine, the third of water drawn from a sacred fountain. Then a layer of the purest wheat flower was put down and at last a black ram was slaughtered; its blood, flowing from the wound in its throat, had to mingle with the libations. The remainder of the ceremony consisted of votive prayers which promised the dead a thanksgiving sacrifice in return for their good will. Homer in the Odyssey retraces for us in this was the evocation of the soothsayer Tiresias, which was obtained by Ulysses after fulfilling rites indicated by the witch Circe. The soul of Teresias appears, drinks a little of the blood spilt over the grave and reveals to the King of Ithaca the perils which await him on land and sea, until the favour of the gods allows him to see his home again. A host of other dead people crowd around the grave, and each of them talks to Ulysses after being allowed to taste the victim’s blood. This fantastic scene has a striking effect in Homer’s poem; but it would be childish to believe in could happen in reality.” [Page 207, Bold and Italics mine]
Now my pal Paul Kimball is not going to use this practice (method) to conjure ghosts nor do I think will any other ghost hunter, but it is one way to try if one really wants to conjure with spirits if the dead.
Accessing the paranormal is not a cavalier thing. It takes knowledge that is not readily available or easy to obtain, to say nothing of the items needed to carry out such rites.
But if ghost hunters are serious about their activity, they have to engage with such knowledge to obtain their goal.
Otherwise they are playing at “ghost hunting” or other paranormal pursuits.
