Mormonism and the UFO phenomenon

I’ve long been fascinated by Mormonism or Latter Day Saint movement of Restorationist Christianity.

The cosmology, metaphysics, or theology of the church is wacky but intriguing. Here are some highlights that make my point I think:

According to Mormon scripture, the Earth’s creation was not ex nihilo, but organized from existing matter. The Earth is just one of many inhabited worlds, and there are many governing heavenly bodies, including the planet or star Kolob, which is said to be nearest the throne of God.

Mormons understand that there are many gods and goddesses in the cosmos

Mormon cosmology teaches that the Earth is not unique, but that it is one of many inhabited planets.

According to Latter-day Saint Oliver B. Huntington, Joseph Smith made a statement that there was life on the Moon.

[Smith] said the moon was inhabited by men and women the same as this earth, and that they lived to a greater age than we do – that they live generally to near the age of 1000 years. He described the men as averaging near six feet in height, and dressing quite uniformly in something near the Quaker style.”

Now, we UFO buffs have poo-poohed George Adamski for his “Venus is alive with people” statements and Billy Meier is dismissed because his UFOs are manned, allegedly, by citizens of a planet in the Pleiades star system.

How is it that those of the Mormon faith believe Joseph Smith, fervently by the way, while few believe anything that Billy Meier says and no one – well, also maybe a few — has had anything to say positively about George Adamski’s “visitations” to Venus and other supposed inhabited planets in our Solar System?

Joseph Smith’s “information” came from the Book of Mormonwhich was originally written in otherwise unknown characters referred to as “reformed Egyptian” engraved on golden plates. Smith said that the last prophet to contribute to the book, a man named Moroni, buried it in the Hill Cumorah in present-day Manchester, New York before his death, and then returned to Earth in 1827 as an angel, revealing the location of the plates to Smith, and instructing him to translate the plates into English for use in the restoration of Christ’s true church in the latter days.

Billy Meier’s informants were extraterrestrials from the Pleiades and Adamski’s “information” came about by way of his travels to the planets he ascribed as inhabited.

It’s all crazy right?

Not if you accept Spanish UFO researcher Jose Caravaca’s Distortion Theory wherein an “external agent” uses an internal agency to project a mise en scène upon or into a UFO witness’s mind, as a concrete reality.

Of course, the projection is not exactly sensible, but Jose’s hypothesis is called “Distortion Theory.”

I like Jose’s “theory” as it accounts for such florid renditions as that of Joseph Smith, and maybe George Adamski. Billy Meier’s excursions strike me as imaginatory or hoaxed, and I know some will want to debate the hoax suggestion vigorously.

Even the newly recounted Navy pilot “sightings” of UFOs can be seen as fittable in Jose’s theory, without having to do much hammering them into place.

At any rate, the Mormon idea of many Gods extant in the Universe, and many inhabited planets goes down well with me, as do the hints in The Hebrew Bible of Elohim, as well other mythological and religious texts of ancient times and even into the relatively modern era; Urantiais one and others can be found here:
