The other day, I mentioned to my academic pal Bryan Sentes that I was troubled by José Caravaca’s insistence that his “external agent” was a psychological mechanism while I tried to convince José otherwise, that his external agent was an actual, material operative.
(José provided, again, an elaborate explanation of his external agent, which is online here, a few posts down from this one.)
Bryan said José’s theory made the unconscious his external agent, and was, thus, (he was implying) an actual entity.
But this would make Freud’s and Jung’s unconscious into material creations, which I’ve tried to fathom but can’t find substantial or even flighty offerings that this is so, working my way through Husserl, Lacan, Stenger, and Edelman, among others.
I’ve even considered the Krell’s substantive ID that terrorized visitors to the Forbidden Planet as a fictional hint.
What I’m struggling with is the indeterminacy of flying saucers [UFOs] throughout their appearances, from ancient times up into to the current navy pilot encounters: the UFOs acting more like mental projections than solid objects (or aircraft).
José Caravaca’s Distortion Theory intrigues but getting by his external agent is tough for me, and for his fans and followers also.
That a mental process creates UFO scenarios is intriguing and creative but something has to spark the mental process, it can’t be one and the same within the Distortion process and be “external.”
That aside, I’m not finding anything in the neurological, philosophical, physical disciplines (even quantum mechanics) to assuage the idea that thought can create materiality, the Krell “ID” notwithstanding.
José’s Theory comes closest to providing an explanation for UFO events, external agent and all.
But there’s something sticky going on, and I’m in pursuit.
