The Message is Everything, despite …

My academic pal and scholar Bryan Sentes likes to quote (or use) Jacques Derrida, and those who often refer to Derrida (like MJ Banias).

But Bryan and MJ, among others, more often than not miss some nuanced thinking of the great Jacques.

For instance, I find Derrida’s Literature in Secret, an exegesis of the Biblical passage(s) and Hebrew/Islamic lore of God’s “covenant” with Abraham inspiring.

(I’ve used the work often here and did a thing about the “Covenant” in my booklet The Biblical Paradigm for Homosexuality.)

Derrida explains in the work that he would try to explain, exegete, the Secret between God and Abraham: the “test.”

(The passage under examination is found in Genesis 22, and is the “insane” episode where God – or an angel of God – commands Abraham to sacrifice his son Issac, to prove Abraham’s loyalty to God.)

Derrida calls the command a secret and test or trial, and goes on to write:

“What Test? I would like to propose a reading of it, one that I will distinguish, in this case, from an interpretation. At the same time active and passive, this reading would be presumed by every interpretation, by the exegeses, commentaries, glosses, decipherings that have been accumulating in infinite numbers for thousands of years. As a result it would not be simply one interpretation among others. In both the fictive and nonfictive form that I plan to give to it, it would have the characteristics of a very strange sort of evidence of certainty.” [Chapter One]

This, for me, is the approach that UFO enthusiasts and “researchers: should adopt and apply to UFO reports, tales, accounts…but only those that are first hand, as Derrida attempts to do with the Abrahamic “secret” – using Biblical sources that are seen as authentic as is possible with such ancient manuscripts: the French Pléiade edition, translated by Dhormes (Paris: Gallimard, 1972).

In my Mormonisn piece here, Bryan fixated on a snide aside I made, explaining that “context” was important, which I attempted to dissuade him from; context was irrelevant.

(This “context” thing has always irked me since I got a postal card from a UFO “notable” who chastised me for providing – free, by the way to UFO people – a booklet of UFO materials and clippings, without dates for the sightings, photos, and reports included, offering I guess “ no context.”)

When it comes to UFOs, and certain other unhistorical topics mostly, context is a matter that muddies the waters, as I told Bryan during our colloquy.

One should look at a UFO account, many of them actually, to see what lies within them that is similar and seemingly pertinent.

To go off on tangents, like context, which is irrelevant to the phenomenon, as I see it, unless one is absorbed by the political and conspiratorial aspects – which I see as detrimental to an explanation of the phenomenon – is anathema to investigation and resolution.

Derrida’s small tomic shows that encrusted accumulations of interpretations, for his “secret” analysis deter understanding what is actually going on:

“If the texts we are going to read seem, therefore, to mean (to say) something … it is perhaps something that should be heard …[but] On the other hand, even if one remains content to analyze the semantics … it is difficult to think [of] a retraction that doesn’t apply.” [Chapter Three]

So, take a UFO account (or many) and look at them, without adding “scholarly” mish-mash that doesn’t apply. It will only confuse the matter, something that UFO long-timers and smarty-pants, like Bryan and others often do, not maliciously, only because it’s in their nature to put everything into a stew.
