Morton Smith's Secret Gospel of Mark

I’ve long promoted Morton Smith’s “find” — The Secret Gospel of Mark.

I took a hermeneutic approach to my mention of his Gospel, citing the Canonical Mark at the point where Smith says the Church fathers expurgated passages that told of Jesus/Christ’s dalliance with a young man, whom I think (and suggest) was his disciple John (the Gospel writer and possible writer of Revelation), the often cited “beloved” disciple.

We know that the final verses of Mark were “adjusted” — reworked and spurious.

And the Canonical passage about the young, naked man who fled when Jesus was captured by the Temple guards, provides enough heft to suggest that there was something odd about the briefly mentioned fleeing. Why note the nakedness?

This kind of clue, as minor as it seems, supports the tenor of the Secret Gospel, and asserting Smith created the whole account as a hoax — in light of his character and his professorial position — offends.

You fellows — some of whom are advocates of the UFO ETH nonsense — should try to be alert to possibilities that have some grist.

The Morton theses is just such a possibility.

Also, claiming God and, more importantly Jesus, had homosexual proclivities is, in today’s acceptance of the deviation, no big deal.

It for me is a matter, not only of faith but exegetical truth.
