Does the Witness (Percipient) to a Paranormal Incident Really Matter?

There is a school of thought in the paranormal/UFO community that people who see paranormal entities or become engaged in a paranormal event are integral to the thing seen or experienced.

Jacques Vallee has corrupted my pals Bryan Sentes and MJ Banias with such thinking.

Others are affected by John Keel’s insinuation(s) and my colleague José Caravaca’s Distortion Theory seems afflicted by the idea.

And one has to acknowledge that the makeup – neurological, biological, psychological, et cetera – of the individual is reflected in his or her account of their experience.

But does the impact of the experience have anything to do with the essence of the thing seen or interacted with? Some insist it does. And maybe it does but we who want to know what the para- normality is, what it’s intrinsic reality is, have to work around any reactive element. Otherwise, we would end up where we are now with explanations for UFOs, Big Foot, Loch Ness’s “monster,” ghosts, and all other odd or queer things that lie outside our normal assessment of what is actual or real. Nowhere.

Yet, what about those persons who are affected by or impacted by paranormality?

First off, there are classifications that can be drawn from what we know about people who have had a paranormal experience.

I’m not going to formally categorize the classifications but do wish to outline them.
In Maurice Bucke’s masterful book Cosmic Consciousness, the good doctor lists such notables as Gautama the Buddha, Jesus the Christ, St. Paul, Mohammed, Francis Bacon, William Blake, Honoré Balzac, Walt Whitman as instances of Cosmic Consciousness, with these lesser, imperfect lights (some doubtful): Moses, Isaiah, Lî R, Socrates, Roger Bacon, Blaise Pascal, Benedict Spinoza, Swedenborg, William Wordsworth, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Alfred Tennyson, Henry Thoreau, Paramahansa, and many initialed persons, not named or known via his volume.

Cosmic Consciousness is an awareness of the total reality. It is the highest form of consciousness, an awareness of what truly is.
I differ with Dr. Bucke’s list, and note he leaves out such personages as Thomas Aquinas and George Washington but includes St. Paul who had an hysterical hallucination brought on by his remorse over persecuting Christians. And Walt Whitman, a homosexual poet who had insights but none outside his sexual proclivities.

And not to include Socrates or Moses and Swedenborg in the primary group seems to me to be problematical.

For instance, the great Thomas Aquinas had a vision while allegedly levitating above an altar during a personal Mass, of which he after-ward  wrote, “Everything I have written is as straw” – meaningless. Aquinas had a true vision of the real Reality.

Unfortunately, he never told us what that vision was, nor has any other persons experiencing Cosmic Consciousness. That’s a problem.

The persons noted above refer to an element or offer examples of what they perceived, The Buddha, Isaiah, Christ, Mohammed, Blake, and the poets for instance, but nothing substantial or definitive.

So, we have people perceiving something truly awesome and significant but with nothing to help us understand what that was.

We know (or think) such religious personages as Joan of Arc, Hildegard de Bingen, and Saint Teresa had some kind of contact with other world beings, angels or God,

And we know that people today have had contact with other things or beings of an otherworldly nature: Big Foot, ghosts (or spirits), and UFO entities, et cetera.

(I’m not including those scolds who’ve used hallucinogenic drugs or plants – LSD, mushrooms, or cannabis – as their “visions” or experiences are neurological not fantastic. Nor do I include UFO abductees. They’ve been afflicted also with a neurological disorder.)

Then I have to mention persons who have had what we like to think is a UFO ET contact moment.
A prime example is Calvin Parker of the Pascagoula incident, about which I’ll write momentarily.
Also, we have schizophrenics who have been subject to disorienting auditory and visual experiences.

In the Cosmic Consciousness category resides those who have seen or felt the Real Reality and came away from the experience a little chastened, like Aquinas, or active about re-arranging life as they saw it,  Jesus, the Buddha, and Mohammed for instance.

But we have to ask, did they really see the Other Reality, the Real Reality, or something disguised by José Caravaca’s “external agent”  or my (and Paul Kimball’s) malicious entity (God) or the devious, mad Game Player?

We don’t know.

In the case of schizophrenics, such persons so afflicted, may have experienced or are experiencing the Real Reality and it’s so disturbing they can’t cope with what they are subject to or have been subject to.

In the case of Calvin Parker and his Pascagoula experience, he has survived and dealt with (and is dealing with) what happened to him, what he was subject to: an element from the Real Reality?

Knowing more about the humans who claim to have experienced Cosmic Consciousness or something queer and odd outside our normal perception of things tells us nothing about the Real Reality or who or what may be invigorating another reality, real or contrived.

Those insisting that the witnesses to UFOs and all the other paranormal entities and things enumer- ated over the years and even today are the most important aspects of our investigation into reality, consciousness, and existence is folly of a great kind.

Those advocating the idea we should be studying the persons experiencing The Other(s) and the attributes of the Paranormal rather than the Paranormal itself are just plainly mad or ignorant.. Their course takes us far from our goal of trying to understand what we are, who we are, and what existence is all about…why are we here, to what purpose, and for whose folly….not theirs, I assure you.
