On September 28, 2013, the Center for Investigative Reporting revealed prescriptions for certain opioids such as oxycodone and methadone skyrocketed 270 percent in the past 12 years. The death rate from these opioids is double the national average. More than 50 percent of the US veteran population has chronic pain with post-traumatic stress disorder contributing to that. 2 out of 10 veterans struggling with PTSD also suffer from a substance addiction.
