Perhaps Italian leader Benito Mussolini (1883 – 1945) was modern Europe’s first populist politician. Ushering in a social revolution, the ex-infantryman, wounded in WWI, was a journalist and revolutionary. His party and its Blackshirts anti-Communist activists fought for revolutionary nationalism. In 1922, Mussolini became the youngest Italian prime minister in history.

As with all defeated foes throughout history the visionary who created from the ashes of the Great War a great nation (1922 – 1943) has since been denigrated by his conquerors. 

One of Mussolini’s greatest admirers was Britain’s wartime unelected premier, Winston Churchill.  During his 21 years tenure, the Italian leader won the highest of praise for his achievements. None were more supportive than the British residents who lived the good life in Fascist Italy.

“We wish to state most clearly and emphatically that there exists here today nothing that can be justly termed either tyranny or suppression of personal freedom as guaranteed by constitutional law in any civilised land. We believe that Mussolini enjoys the enthusiastic support and admiration of, and who are contented, orderly and prosperous to a degree hitherto unknown in Italy, and probably without parallel at the present time among other great European nations still suffering from the war.” – Committee of British Residents, Florence. ‘Financial Times’. 1926.

In 1933, the Financial Times published a special eight-page supplement under the caption: The Renaissance of Italy: Fascism’s Gift of Order and Progress. 

Fascist leader Benito Mussolini rose to power in Italy in the 1920s and led the country for two decades until he was overthrown in 1943. The Italian leader was cold-bloodedly slaughtered with much the same barbarism as was later Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi by the same backers of the Bolshevik Empire (USSR). Then too, the Americans cheered and jeered.

Mussolini’s great-grandson Caio Giulio Cesare Mussolini is today running as a candidate for the populist Brothers of Italy Party in next month’s European elections. Caio Mussolini, 51, was a naval officer for 15 years, and then worked as an executive in Italy’s largest defence contractor before turning to politics.

Giorgia Meloni, the leader of the Brothers of Italy Party, announced Mussolini’s candidacy over the weekend. “He is a professional, a serviceman, a patriot,” Meloni.

Caio is the third member of the Mussolini family to enter politics since the war. His second cousin, Alessandra Mussolini, now 56, was a member of the Senate, the Chamber of Deputies and the European Parliament between 2004 and 2014.

Earlier this week she called Canadian comedian Jim Carrey a bastard after he tweeted a drawing of her grandfather and his mistress, Clara Petacci, strung up in the main square in Milan after their murder by Communist partisans in 1945. Another cousin, Rachele Mussolini, is a member of Rome city council.

Caio Mussolini told the conservative newspaper Libero he would “never be ashamed of my family.”

Adding that the Mussolini brand of Fascism died with his grandfather, he went on to say, “I see other dangers. These are the thought police, globalism, the dictatorship of political correctness, uncontrolled immigration a few small financial groups that control everything, Islamic extremism.”
