Biden, Ukraine and Russia's Roulette Game on the Ground

Under the guidence of Joe Biden’s inept foreign policies, certain regions of the world have become powder kegs with slow burning fuses. Consider the events in Ukraine. Russian President Putin believes the collapse of the Soviet Union was the greatest tragedy in history, and he is intent on restoring Soviet glory through a military incursion into Ukraine, possibily beyond. At the same time, China has lit the fuse on their desire to once again annex Taiwan, an island nation the United States has promised to defend and protect. Global unrest and conflict on so many fronts.

This graph is from a story in the Daily Mail and highlights four different approaches into Ukraine which Russia might take. The different invasion options are from various defense analysts and military advisors familiar with the Ukraine/Russia situation.

The lightest-touch available to Putin is Option One. This route would see him intensify the tactics he is already accused of using against Ukraine in a so-called ‘hybrid war’ which mixes conventional attacks with novel forms of warfare.

Option Two would move up the escalation. Putin could seek to expand gains he already made in 2014 when he seized Crimea and the cities of Luhansk and Donetsk which sit close to the Russian border. This would be considered a limited military incusion into the region.

Option Three could come from multiple fronts, and be a strong military incusion into the region. The number of Russian troops at the border is large, and an attack west of the current frontline between Ukraine and rebel groups would dramatically shift the balance of power in the region. Another approach would be to launch naval attacks in the Sea of Azov and Black Sea, striking a serious Ukranian military weak spot.

Option Four would be a lighting-fast assault (Blitzkrieg) aimed at seizing huge swathes of Ukrainian territory using a shock assault with large numbers of troops spread over multiple fronts. As Russia continues to move more troops to border regions, including into Belarus, such a scenario appears increasingly likely according to defense analysts familiar with the current Ukraine/Russia situation. 

This action would inflict maximum damage on Ukraine in the shortest space of time, unbalancing the government and its allies and significantly shifting the balance of regional power.
