Halloween is a time when people dress up as witches – pointy hats, broomsticks and all. But for followers of the Wiccan faith, witches are a reality. Irish white witch Patricia Weston explains what it’s all about.
AS A WHITE Witch I practice magic and cast spells. I also have a black cat for protection and I have a wand, a broom and a cauldron. I am Wiccan and Wicca, also known as White Witchcraft, is a faith based around nature spirituality. It is a healing, harmonious, nature-loving way of life. Being Wiccan simply means following a spiritual path, empowering yourself, healing yourself and others and taking responsibility for your own growth and spiritual development.
I practice magic and honour and work with the cycles of nature – never interfering with nature, always working in harmony with Mother Earth and the Angels. That means working with the Elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water which combined with Spirit make up All That Exists – the Universe. Spells are cast only for the Highest Good of All and I do not cast spells that would harm nature or anyone in any way. Wiccans believe in the Law of Threefold Return, that cites, what you send out to the universe, good or bad, will be returned to you three times.
Spell casting
I cast my spells in accordance with the phases of the Moon. The New Moon marks the beginning of the Lunar Cycle. It is a time of new beginnings and the phase to cast spells for fresh starts, personal improvement, new jobs and new opportunities. The waxing moon is a time of growth as the moon is getting bigger in the sky as it moves towards the full moon. I cast spells during a waxing moon for increase or growth. The Full Moon phase is the most powerful time to cast spells. During this phase spells which deal with power and magical energies will be at their strongest and this is a great time to cast love spells, healing spells and money spells.
The waning moon is the phase when the full moon fades and with this her energy wanes so it is a great time to cast spells for banishing or removing anything negative from your life such as bad habits or old energy left from old relationships. The Dark Moon is traditionally the last three days of the Lunar cycle, immediately preceding the New Moon. The Dark Moon phase is when the moon is not visible in the sky. This is a rest period for white witches and we do not cast spells during this phase.
Broom
Casting spells involves using the tools of the craft such as a broom, wand, athame cauldron, candles and incense which are set up on the Wiccan altar. The broom is usually hung over the door to protect your space from harm then it is used to clear away negative energy from the altar. This of course is a small hand-size broom!
The wand is one of the most popular magical tools in Wicca. A wand is mainly used for directing energy during a ritual and to cast a circle during spell work to surround yourself in a magical protective angelic light as you work. The cauldron is a symbol of the Goddess, and it’s all about femininity. It is the womb in which life begins. The cauldron can be used to hold earth or salt on an altar to represent the element Earth and it can also be used for spell casting to place objects inside that need to be burned. Different coloured candles and blended incense are also used for spell work.
Rituals revolve around the eight seasons or Sabbats. The four greater or most powerful Wiccan Sabbats are Samhain or Halloween on October 31, Imbolc or Brigid’s Day on February 2, Beltaine or Mayday on May 1, and Lughnasa on August 1. These four Sabbats are linked to the four seasons of the Wheel of the Year and are celebrated at times when the seasons change. They are magical and powerfully energetic periods when we honour and celebrate the earth for all she has given us.

I have met a few Wiccans as there was a high population of them in our City. A few times we have been approached as they wanted to speak to us, as they could tell we where American Indians. They would say how they believe the same as us, yet they never seemed to be able to agree on there “religion”. I said We actually do not believe in magic, the Great White Spirit is real. He is pure white light and we also believe in the Bible. Before any non Indians came to North America we knew all that was in the Bible, the first Bible in the US printed in a Native Language was much requested. Some Natives had to come up with there spoken words to writing. The people work by the light of the day, as the Sun tells us the time of day, and protects from predators. The day is warmer, by night we spend time with family and let the animals hunt there prey, like the Owl. We stay warm in our beds at night, we do not stalk about needlessly at night like a Mountain lion. When there is Peace among the People we live by day not needing to travel at night under darkness. The Lord is light and knowledge, his Son came to teach us to live better and be better people as the Earth is our inheritance. To cast spells under a Moon is not for Mankind, but in secret and this takes the Peace away. Wiccan is not of nature, a spirit of true light needs no spells as what he needs is given to him, live good and give of yourself, respect your Elders and ways. You then will be wealthy in the most important way, not with money that you cannot eat, but the pure spring water of life, He speaks to you. He shows you your way. You have no power to cast anything but a eternal life of darkness, be prepared because if you find the truth the darkness will turn on you and suffering will come, you will have to fight for your life, to be with truth and love, as for Him who Created all things to speak to you, he will in His way then you will know I am telling you the truth.
