Unusual California Weather and the Death Valley Chill
The highest temperature ever (reliably) recorded on Earth was 134 degrees and it occurred in the Furnance Creek section of Death Valley, California on July 10, 1913. This past Sunday, however, the high temperature in Death Valley maxed out at a relatively chilly 89 degrees which is nearly 30 degrees below average for this time of year. It set the record there for the coolest high temperature ever recorded for the date (August 3rd) by smashing the old record of 104 degrees set in 1945. In fact, this was only the 8th time that a high temperature in the 80s has occurred in Death Valley in July or August with records going back to 1911 and there hasn’t been a high less than 90 degrees since 1984 (source Capital Weather Gang).
One of the factors that caused the unusual chill in Death Valley was an extensive cloud cover that blocked out the typical intense sunshine. Copious amounts of moisture poured into southern California during the weekend from the Pacific Ocean which resulted in unusual rainfall for this time of the year. In fact, some areas received record amounts of rainfall for the date which led to floods and mudslides in mountainous areas. Rain continues today in California, but this time it is falling across northern parts of the state.

This is truly bizarre weather we’re having for this time of year for sure. I live in South Lake Tahoe. Its been cool and wet. The front that came up from the south seemed to just stop just north of here and take a left turn toward the Pacific Ocean. Clouds are now coming from the northeast. Very strange looking on the radar images. Also, on the National Mosaic Enhanced Radar Image at 2348 UTC, today, a strange looking circular radar pulse was visible centered over Vandenberg Air Force Base.

I’ve gotta say the it appears the weather is being manipulated. Call it “mother nature” if you like, but I don’t think this is what’s happening. Was watching Intellicast’s interactive weather map and clicked on the projected “future” weather mode. It’s uncanny how the clouds formed and dissappeared today up here in South Lake Tahoe, just as the “animation” showed. Will watch the cloud development tomorrow to see how accurate it is again. It appears to me that these weather “models” are actually the source of weather “patterns”. Its as though a super-duper computer, being fed real-time information, is introducing measured interventions somehow to produce a desired weather pattern. Probably wrong though.
Well, it appears I’m wrong, or am I? The “future” forecast on Intellicast didn’t turn out like it was supposed to, but there’s something peculiar that I noticed the day before. The “future” forecast for today, 8/7/2014, shown this morning was different than the future forecast shown on 8/6/2014. Stangely, the future forecast from 8/6/2014 was very close to what is happening weather wise today up here in SLT, CA. Go figure.
the weather can be a fickle thing to watch esp with all the technology today. We are in a time of change and I’m sure we’ll see more extremes in the future. Thanks for commenting.
