December Outlook 2014. The Yo-Yo ride starts now from flooding to snowstorms (All 50 States outlook)

As we said way way back in June with our outlooks we knew December was going to be an up and down month for snow and temps. California is getting  it’s rain as predeicted as the start of a weak El Nino is starting to show its face here in December.  Sure we are not into a fully classified El Nino (you need 3 months in a row…we have one so far) but we did start it this week. The models below are tightly clustered for a weak El Nino. We do have a 20% of a moderate El Nino…1% of a strong one later this winter at this point.

All the record cold and snow in the Midwest and East has made for an early start for ice on the Great Lakes. So what does that mean for our weather pattern. Cities along the traditional snow belts like Buffalo, Syracuse, Chicago, Marquette, St St. Marie, Cleveland and Rochester may now see a shorter lake effect season if the cold weather persists. The ice build-up will slow down a little December 5-15th as temps get a little closer to normal and even above normal at times.
