Why do cosmic rays increase when solar activity is low? 
Consider the following: To reach Earth, cosmic rays have to penetrate the inner solar system. Solar storms make this more difficult. CMEs and gusts of solar wind tend to sweep aside cosmic rays, lowering the intensity of radiation around our planet. On the other hand, when solar storms subside, cosmic rays encounter less resistance; reaching Earth is a piece of cake.  Forecasters expect solar activity to drop sharply in the years ahead as the 11-year solar cycle swings toward another deep minimum. Cosmic rays are poised to increase accordingly.

5 killed, 36 injured, 500 000 homes without power after severe storm hits Poland

Five people have been killed and at least 36 injured as a result of falling trees after a series of severe thunderstorms hit Poland late Friday into Saturday, August 12, 2017.

Two girls, aged 13 and 14, were crushed by falling trees while sleeping in a tent when a storm hit the campground for Girl Guides and Boy Scouts in the northern village of Suszek. Another 20 children were said to have been injured. 

Adam Kralisz, chairman of the Lodz Region of the Scouting Association of the Republic (Poland), where the scouts were from, told the private Polsat television that evacuation was ordered immediately, but conditions were horrendous. “We had to force our way for kilometers through the forest, among falling trees,” he said, as reported by Reuters.

Massive flooding kills 36 in Nepal, affect 1,100,000 in India’s Assam

Heavy monsoon rains since Friday, August 11, 2017 caused massive flooding and landslides in parts of Nepal, killing at least 36 and displacing thousands. Dozens are still missing. At the same time, the flood situation in India’s state of Assam worsened drastically and claimed at least 5 people today. The region will receive more heavy rain in the days ahead.

Many of the casualties were reported in the Terai region of Nepal bordering India, which faced massive flooding.

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba called an emergency meeting with home minister Janardan Sharma, police chiefs and other officials to expedite an immediate search-and-rescue operation in Tarai.

M 6.4 Earthquake Sumatra 13 August 2017; Seismic Unrest Continues

Early on the 13th a magnitude 6.4 earthquake occurred off the coast of Southern Sumatra. This activity was anticipated because of building pressure in the West Pacific. Yesterday, the West Pacific was still very quiet, but it has now become pretty active, from Japan and Taiwan down to the Philippines, Indonesia, P.N.G and the Solomon Islands. Be on watch in the coming days.

ALERT: Cosmic Rays on the Rise – High-energy Radiation reaching Earth from Deep Space

Researchers have long known that solar activity and cosmic rays have a yin-yang relationship. As solar activity declines, cosmic rays intensify. Lately, solar activity has been very low indeed. 

Are cosmic rays responding? The answer is “yes.” Spaceweather.com and the students of Earth to Sky Calculus have been using helium balloons to monitor cosmic rays in the stratosphere. Their data show that cosmic rays in the mid-latitude stratosphere now are approximately 13% stronger than they were one year ago.

Cosmic rays, which are accelerated toward Earth by distant supernova explosions and other violent events, are an important form of space weather. They can seed clouds, trigger lightning, and penetrate commercial airplanes. 

Furthermore, there are studies linking cosmic rays with cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death in the general population. Among patients who have an implanted cardioverter – defibrillator (ICD), the aggregate number of life-saving shocks appears to be correlated with the number of cosmic rays reaching the ground.
