Appears to me you are providing misleading information. This proposal is not to buy land..it is simply a proposal to make it possible for White River NWR to expand IF and ONLY IF there is a willing seller adjacent to the refuge. In fact, the only way that the majority of US citizens will be able to utilize this land is if it becomes part of the NWR system. Otherwise, these properties will be purchased by a millionaire and the public will get no usage of the land.
If the proposal was approved and any land within the expansion area were to sale to the NWR, tax dollars would not be used to purchase the land..hunters/conservationist dollars in the form of duck stamp money are potentially how the land could be bought..there is also talks of BP oil spill settlement money being spent outside of the Gulf Coast…why wouldn’t we want that money in AR?
The Secure Arkansas group has a well earned reputation for being a bunch of kooks, crackpots and cranks. Their habit of speaking before they know the facts is why they have no credibility here in Arkansas. Its a shame .. I’m a property owner and business owner and Im staunch supporter of property rights. But Im also an avid hunter and conservationist. Here are the facts about the refuge expansion plan.
There is no “forcible taking of private land” under this plan. This is a crazy rumor being spread by these ANTI-Refuge naysayers in an attempt to scare people and keep the duck stamp money from being spent in Arkansas. Arkansas Sportsman overwhelmingly support this proposal!
Bottom line is that some landowners have approached the refuge seeking to sell land to the refuge. So what the refuge has proposed is that IF, in the future, a nearby landowner wishes to sell land to the refuge …the refuge would have the ability to make a fair market value offer. The landowner DOES NOT have to accept the offer or agree to sell to the refuge if he does not want to. Now or ever! The landowner can just as well sell it to you or me if they so choose. It’s as simple as that.
The refuge CANNOT compel anyone to sell land to them under this program.
Therefore, by necessity, the refuge expansion proposal put forth has a very long time horizon. Why? Because they can only acquire land by waiting for WILLING sellers to come forward.
Contact your congressman and ask them to KEEP OUR DUCK STAMP funds in Arkansas by supporting the White River refuge expansion.
