Mystery of the Bass Strait Triangle

Much has been written about the Bermuda Triangle, but other triangles exist, all every bit as ominous as that stretch of lonely sea that extends from the coastal waters of southern Florida out into the lonely Atlantic.

There’s the great Sargasso Sea, the dread of ancient mariners. Many a seaman had good mates that entered the sluggish waters never to return.

The infamous Devil’s Triangle between Japan and the Korean Peninsua has long been known for odd disappearances, eerie time anomalies, and terrifying UFO encounters.

Famed researcher Ivan T. Sanderson studied and charted many such regions that encircled the Earth like invisible oases of Doom. One such place is the Bass Strait Triangle off the southeastern shores of Australia.

The mysterious Aussie triangle is the home of many legends and myths. It’s also the last place many lost souls found themselves before slipping from the moorings of whatever anchored them here and kept them from there.

And of course, the Bass Strait Triangle is the spot where one of the most famous—and deeply disturbing—UFO incidents took place: the horrifying abduction of Fredrick Valentich.

“[It's] coming for me right now…”

As reported by Unsolved Mysteries: “On October 21st, 1978 Frederick Valentich was flying his Cessna 821L airplane on a 125 mile training flight over Bass Strait, en route to King Island, Australia, when he told the air traffic controllers that he had just been buzzed by a UFO. Frederick said the ship had a green light, and wondered if he was being harassed by a military jet or if someone was playing a practical joke on him. Valentich reported that there was something wrong with his plane engine, and that the ship in question was hovering and definitely not a regular aircraft. Next there were strange metallic scraping sounds…“

Nothing more was heard; the radio transmission ceased.

Later investigations revealed numerous reports from area residents of a strange green light hovering or streaking the sky.

More astounding: credible eyewitnesses came forward to testify they observed Valentich’s aircraft pass over their heads and being trailed—or chased—by a weird glowing, green light.

Some websites that cite the details of this case have partial or full transcripts of the radio communication between Valentich and the Australian ground controllers he was in contact with during the final minutes of his flight. The actual Australian government copies of the transcript have more credibility than simply regurgitated text.

The case left UFO researchers stunned, a nation in shock, and a rush by journalists all over the globe to report the astonishing story.

Mysterious object seen 20 minutes before incident

After the disappearance of Valentich, shaken witnesses emerged who claimed to have seen a weird object in the sky about 20 minutes before Valentich’s Cessna flew into the airspace. At first investigators tended to dismiss the reports until one witness produced a photograph taken less than half an hour before Valentich arrived.

The strange object captured on film galvanized authorities and they intensified their effort to determine exactly what had happened to the missing aviator.

Despite spending years on the case, no final determination was ever officially reached.
