Is Your Dog’s Food Making Him Sick?

If you are like any good pet owner, you probably spend some time searching for qualitydog food. You look for words like “all natural” or “fortified” to ensure that your pet is getting the best possible nutrition. Yet, if you are buying conventional dog food, chances are that it is actually making your pet sick. Today’s dog foods are filled with toxins, and those toxins can wreak havoc on your pet’s sensitive system.

Dangerous Ingredients Are Common Place

If you read the ingredients in your current bag of dog food, you will see terms like phosphoric acid, glyceryl monostearate and propylene glycol. Do you think these are foods that your dog would get if he were hunting in the wild? Absolutely not! Additives, binders and coloring agents are all present in most commercially made dog food, and they are actually quite dangerous. Some have even been linked to an increased risk of fatal diseases, like cancer, in pets.

For example, BHT and BHA, two serious carcinogens, are commonly found in pet food. These, along with ethoxyquin, are used to stabilize the food and preserve the fat it contains. This ingredient continues to be used in pet food in spite of the fact that it is linked to cancer, immune system problems and less serious conditions like loss of hair and liver damage.

Your dog’s food probably also includes “artificial color” as one of its ingredients. Did you know that Red #40, commonly used in pet food, is derived from coal tar and is a possible carcinogen? Yellow #6, Blue #1 and Blue #2, also commonly found in pet foods, increase your pet’s sensitivity to parvo and other fatal viruses. Yes, people eat these all of the time, but in far smaller quantities than what is included in pet food. By feeding your pet commercial pet food with artificial colors, you may be serving him a death certificate.

All of these ingredients, common though they may be, are highly toxic to your pet. By including them in the diet, you are exposing your pet to toxins every day. Add to this the environmental toxins he is exposed t from commercially produced chemicals, and you are setting your pet up for a problem with toxicity.

Unneeded Ingredients Included

Most commercially made dog foods are packed with carbohydrates to serve as fillers. This is because of the sheer cost of meat. By putting rice, corn and other carbohydrates in the dog’s food, it can be made far more cheaply. While these do not pose a cancer or immune system risk, they are not what a dog was designed to eat.
