Army general fired: 'Loss of confidence' masks 'inappropriate conduct'
An Army general was fired Thursday by the U.S. commanding general in Africa, Gen. Carter Ham. According to an April 5 report, Maj. Gen. Ralph Baker, commander of the Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa, may have been fired March 28 on other charges than what was told to CNN by Defense officials.
CNN was informed that the Army general was fired due to a “lack of confidence” in his ability, but the Associated Press had anonymous officials tell them the general was let go because of alcohol, sex, and sexual harassment. Allegations of “inappropriate conduct” by Baker seemed to fit the justification for his firing more than a “lack of confidence” by the unidentified officials.
Baker is filing an appeal with U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel. The two-star general is said to have also been significantly fined for his misconduct, but it’s unknown how much.
The U.S. military has had a number of issues with inappropriate conduct” in recent years. Baker is one of many general officers being investigated or reprimanded for sexual misconduct, Washington Post.
Allegations of sexual harassment and sexual assault in the U.S. military are alarming. It’s an issue that needs to be taken seriously where individuals should have the sole focus of protecting the nation and not worry about having to protect just themselves from those misusing power
