The True Meaning of Women’s Equality Day

“Women who seek to be equal with men lack ambition.”

When many modern feminists hear those words of Marilyn Monroe, they nod their heads, sometimes even cheer, and say, “Yeah, that’s right!  We don’t need those nasty ol’ men to survive!  Destroy the men!!!”  In honor of Women’s Equality Day, it seems proper to examine the women’s rights movement from its inception to its current state.  What began as a quest for equal voting rights and equal pay has regressed into something that would make Susan B. Anthony and Lucretia Mott turn over in their graves.  Not only have today’s feminists attempted to change the definition of equality, but they have done so at the expense of society’s well-being.

The women’s rights movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries achieved victories of which women who came before they had only dreamed.  Giving women the right to vote and thus the opportunity to have a say in their leaders was an accomplishment that completely changed the way politicians approached voters — they now had to campaign to women as well as men.  After subsequently earning women the right to equal pay for equal work and placing them on a level playing field with their male counterparts, most feminists felt that the impossible had been accomplished and were content with things as they were.  Women in the workplace and in the poll-booth were no longer treated as inferiors (in today’s White House women on average earn 18% less than men, but hey, that’s another story).

I’m all for equality.  If a woman is being unfairly treated because of her gender, we have a responsibility as a society to stop the injustice and regain equal footing.  However, total equality is not always a guaranteed right; a fundamental principle of America’s founding was equality of opportunity, not equality of outcome.  Any two people, regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or any other factor, have the same opportunities available to them if they’re willing to put in the work necessary to achieve them.  That foundation is what early 20th century feminists were seeking to establish and succeeded in doing so.

With that goal in mind, equality only goes so far.  California’s new law to allow students to choose which bathroom they would like to use based on their “gender identity” is not only wrong but morally absurd.  Why would you place a young girl in a situation where she could potentially be raped or sexually harassed by a male student who claims to “feel” like a female?  As much as liberals try to deny any possibility of such things, common sense tells us that humans have evil tendencies that will be manifested if encouraged.  I believe that this insistence of “equality” in everything, with no regard for safety or common sense, is a direct result of the degradation of the feminist movement.  “Women’s equality” has gone from voting rights — a logical wish that gives women as much political power as men have — to equal pay — another logical objective that levels the playing field between men and women in the workplace — to abortion — men can’t get pregnant, therefore women should have the right to become “unpregnant” even if it means murdering their unborn child in the process — to government-subsidized birth control — government should force employers to fund women’s sexual habits because that way they’re “equal” with men — to now fighting for, essentially, gender-neutral bathrooms that allow students to decide based on feeling which bathroom they’d like to use.  Slowly but surely, true feminism has been overlooked in place of the latest fad.  True feminism of integrity, self-respect, hard-work, and responsibility needs to make a comeback or women will be lowered into statuses that are far beneath our full potential.  On Women’s Equality Day, recognize true equality and fight for that, rather than a made-up definition that only threatens distraction from the real thing.
