You Won't Believe What Los Angeles Just Did To Frackers

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Los Angeles City Council did something Friday to frackers that few cities of its size in the world have done to frackers. It passed a ban on fracking within its jurisdiction, making the City of Angels more heavenly and making it the first oil-producing city in the state to prohibit the controversial extraction process.

Hydraulic fracturing, fracking, involves pumping millions of gallons of a chemical fluid mix down a newly drilled well to fracture the rock formation so oil or natural gas can flow out of the ground. The toxic waste water is usually disposed in environmentally hazardous ways.

Scientists, lay environmentalists and filmmakers have shown that the practice pollutes drinking water, triggers seismic activity, and has disastrous affects on human health.

First California oil-producing city to outlaw fracking

The new rule bans fracking and other forms of “well stimulation” within the city of Los Angeles, until the council is assured that they pose no threat to residents’ health and safety. One can, therefore say, fracking will be permanently banned in the city.

This makes Los Angeles the first oil-producing city in California to call a halt to the practice.

The city’s Planning and Land Use Management Committee prompted the vote. It had decided Tuesday to vote on the issue.

Four towns in Colorado instituted similar bans back in November of 2013, and Mora County in new Mexico became the first full county to impose a ban in May.

Other cities and states, one by one, have been following with fracking bans.

California lawmakers are pushing for state-wide ban, based on concerns that the large amounts of freshwater consumes franking will further stress the state’s already drought-wracked drinking supplies.

A recent report by Ceres found that 96 percent of franking wells in California are near areas struggling with drought and high water stress.

States, towns and cities that are just saying “No” to Big Energy’s fracking include:

  1. Arkansas has banned oil and gas wells in a 1,550-square mile area based on quakes there.
  2. Ohio has  banned wells near fault lines.
  3. In Kansas, a task force was assigned by the state government to assess links between quakes and fracking.
  4. Vermont has banned fracking, despite negligible prospects for oil or gas production there.
  5.  Massachusetts is seriously considering banning fracking.
  6. Five Colorado cities have banned fracking, though they face legal challenges from the state – not the industry.
  7. Dallas, Texas has banned fracking within 1,500 feet of a home, school, church, and other protected areas, effectively banning the practice within the city.
  8. A Texan rural town has demanded regulators act immediately to ban fracking in their area, alleging that what’s caused a spate of recent earthquakes.
  9. New York City has banned fracking.
  10. Los Angeles banned fracking.

On Feb. 26, Shafter almond farmer Tom Frantz, California State Grange President Bob McFarland, Monterey County vintner Paula Getzelman of Tre Gatti Vineyards, Chez Panisse Head Chef Jerome Waag and Food & Water Watch’s Adam Scow and Susan Kuehn delivered a letter signed by 145 California farmers calling for a moratorium on fracking to Governor Brown’s office.

Wonderful news for a city that is beset with terrible fossil fuel pollution, even though they have the toughest vehicle emissions standards in the country. Keep up the momentum and go after the industrial polluters!

A hearty congratulations to every Angelino who made this happen.

Gee, too bad about all the potential jobs lost and affordable fuel. The Fracker Fairytales too precedence….Just like the “Global Warming” BS that now EVEN Greenpeace can’t sell. A study, conducted by scientists at the University of Texas and published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences — and co-financed by one of the highest-profile environmentalists in the country — (Tom Steyer, a billionaire environmentalist) that shows much smaller amounts of methane emissions associated with fracking, far less than environmentalists and the Environmental Protection Agency have contended. Of course that is just ONE of the studies that deems fracking environmentally safe.

Safe? Who do you think pulls the purse strings on so-called science academies? Who do they serve?

      • paul brown

TROLL ALERT! Help me put down these industry-supported liars. We don’t have to counter all their arguments, which are endless thanks to the people who feed them. We just have to show they are liars.

The are fossil fuel lies promoted by the industry, like these ones, are soundly disproved by scientific research and by the experience of people who are victims of the industry, like the people of Louisiana and West Virginia. The PNAS paper mentioned shows much HIGHER methane emissions than previously believed, obviating any benefits of burning methane instead of coal and oil. See http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2013/11/u-s-methane-emissions-far-exceed-government-estimates/.

Regarding health effects, see for example, an artilcle documenting methane contamination of drinking water by fracking, http://www.pnas.org/content/108/20/8172.full.pdf+

Regarding global warming see for example, see Scientists more certain than ever on climate change, report says, January was one of the hottest Months on Record!

As they say in Texas, that dog don’t hunt.

Thanks for reading – but you’ve misconstrued those papers you cite. I hope this is not intentional, but you are so far off-base, one wonders if you are not deliberately spreading propaganda here. That’s what your comments reads like, it is so out there and even mean-spirited.

For example, there’s actually more methane being emitted than EPA has reported, my dear, as I wrote about last week.

With all due respect, may I suggest that you visit areas being fracked and speak to locals there about health and safety issues they’ve encountered? Be sure to visit homes where there are children and ask how their health is. Please do, and get back with us after that. If not, at least read more on this and try to remember what you’ve read because it’s important to all of us, especially children.

The answer to fracking is simple.

Collect the product, put it in the bottle, light it and give it them back.

You need to ask ho’s land is it anyway.

    • CHESS: PUTIN 7-0 OBAMA

 if you find any frackers then give then crackers on rice they may be faggits.

    • willhart

      Gee…something positive.

    • Jay

There isn’t much that I can agree with when it comes to California politics, but I applaud your decision on this one. I hope that the people in NY and elsewhere take note. Fracking is a dirty and dangerous technology that in time will be outlawed. Soon newer technology will come on line to make Fracking a thing of the past. We just have to hope that the greedy short sighted CEO’s and the dumbed down pro frackers don’t poison us all till then.
