Hundreds of Marines investigated for sharing photos of naked colleagues
An investigation has been launched into allegations of misconduct by Marines who posted nude photos of female service members and veterans on social media, the Marine Corps announced in a statement Monday.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service are reportedly looking at hundreds of Marines after a trove of private photographs were shared on a closed group Facebook message board with thousands of members.
The criminal investigation was sparked when details about the exchange was reported by War Horse and The Center for Investigative Reporting.
The article says since Jan. 30 more than two dozen women – many on active duty, including officers and enlisted service members – have been identified by their rank, full name and military duty station in photographs.
Many of the images appeared to have originated from a consensual yet private exchange while others were collected surreptitiously. While many of the women were identified through the comments on social media, the page also shared links to Google drive files with more images and information.
According to the Marine Corps’ statement, Marines responsible for or directly participated in this type of activity could be subject to criminal proceedings or adverse administrative actions.
The statement says service members and civilians can report information on this incident at the NCIS website or call 1-877-579-3648.
