i have the right to say whatever i like – and you have the right to NOT take offense, though you may lack the self discipline required to restrain yourself
…and of course, nobody has the right to say anything in answer to you that you will not like.
Right?
Andy you have the right to your freedom of speech and people do have a right to take offense at what you say and to confront you with their freedom of speech to express their offense, but neither you nor they have the right to abolish the free speech of each other. You live in an imaginary world if you think that no one has the right to take offense at what you say, this is why we have laws against terroristic threats, libel and slander. You have to be careful at what you say, however if what you say is the truth and people take offense to the truth, well they have that right to do so whether any of us like it or not.
With freedom of speech comes the reality that we have to tolerate opinions and views we do not agree with, but nothing says we can not take offense and counter poise what is said with our own opinions and views about the things that offend us because we can. None of us has the right to do people harm nor destroy their property in violent protest because we are offended by others or their free speech views.
