Preparations for Hurricane Nate are underway along the Gulf Coast. A state of emergency has been declared for 29 counties in Florida as well as Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and New Orleans. Those areas are home to almost 12 million people.

NATE has appeared to ‘rapidly intensify’, the white feature on the top of the storm in this visible satellite loop indicates great strength.

Nate, now a Category 1 hurricane, is accelerating northward in the southern Gulf of Mexico with its sights on the northern Gulf Coast Saturday night and Sunday, where hurricane warnings have been posted. Nate quickly intensified on Friday and is expected to intensify further on Saturday. Hurricane Hunters have found that maximum sustained winds have increased to 75 mph, which makes Nate a Category 1 hurricane. Nate’s center is currently less than 500 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River, moving rapidly north-northwest about 22 mph.

Expect a major hurricane to develop in the next 36 to 48 hours. Conditions are prime for the development of a major hurricane. Predictions are forecasting 18 inches in parts of South Central America from this system and it is in the infancy stages. Heads up if you reside along the Gulf shores and up to 100 miles inland, will be a huge rainmaker.
