Government Shutdown Over For Now?

Friday night the US Government entered a shutdown which hasn’t happened since Obamacare in 2013. What exactly caused it this time?

This shutdown came to pass due to the Democrats wanting to keep over 700,000 undocumented migrants that are protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Republicans in Congress had passed a stop-gap funding legislation on Thursday, however, colleagues in the Senate needed support from ten Democrats to pass. Five had voted in favour, but five Republicans voted against the measure causing it to fail in passing. This led to the spending bill that needed to be passed by Congress and signed by the President to fail in being passed by midnight on the 19th causing the shutdown. And now both sides are pointing fingers at each other. The Schumer Shutdown or Trump Shutdown depending on your view.

Who to blame?

Why is it being referred to as the Schumer Shutdown? A lot of America is pointing the blame to Schumer for this. His support for non-Americans is being blamed for this vote and the situation the government is currently in. It was in 2013 where Schumer made the claim that his Democratic party would never cause a situation of a government shutdown. Now it seems they’re holding the military hostage to get what they want.
On the other hand, some people are blaming Trump for this. His strong stance against immigrants (which has been taken by Obama and Hillary, Trump being the only one to act on it) is what people are blaming all of this on. It’s mostly the Democrats labeling this the Trump Shutdown.

Who was affected?

If the government were to remain closed the following people and services would have been in crisis.

• Military(including veterans and those who received benefits due to losing a family member killed in action)
• National Parks would be closed
• Many government agencies would have to furlough workers, but some services would remain intact (complete list here)
• Low-wage federal contractors
• Kids in poor families

So is it over?

As of now, yes. But the agreement that passed will only be lasting until February 8th, when another meeting will be held to fund the government, this could very well happen again. Schumer has stated today that he and Mitch McConnel have agreed to reopen the government with the commitment to consider DACA legislation. In a vote of 80 yes and 18 no (2 have yet to vote as of this time), the government is now reopened if the House and Trump sign off on this.. We’ll have to wait and see what will happen in February.
