A Warming World Threatens the Planet’s Library of Life

Climate change in the coming decades – even if global temperature rise can be kept to below 2°C – will adversely affect animal and plant species across the world. If the world adopts a “business as usual” approach, and we see a rise of 4.5°C, many more species could die off.

.

“The most important thing the world can do is to keep global temperature rises to a minimum by doing everything possible to reduce the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Put simply, we have to stop burning fossil fuels,” says the report’s Executive Summary.

Biodiversity, the rich tapestry of life on Earth, is vital for human survival. People are directly affected by climate change too, and their responses could increase pressure on biodiversity that’s already being weakened by climatic factors.

“The rapid pace of climate change, combined with a population explosion in the last century, habitat loss, chemical and other pollution, is causing ecological imbalances and pushing more and more species towards the brink of extinction,” says UN Environment climate change and ecosystems expert Niklas Hagelberg.
