Time for PROPERTY TAX REFORM (again, in MI)….

Conversation (bits and pieces anyway, but with the image attached it should make sense to most) from GAB (regarding a meme I posted that pictures an elderly couple and DEMAND PROPERTY TAX REFORM SO SENIORS DO NOT GET KICKED OUT OF HOMES THEY LIVE IN ALL THEIR LIVES DUE TO OVER-TAXATION)……..

We should have A NEW PROP-A that raises the Sales Tax just the absolute least possible (from 6.0% to 6.1%) and DRASTICALLY REDUCE PROPERTY TAXES (CAP THEM ENTIRELY) for those 62+ and (Retired as defined by) collecting Social Security… SLASH THEM then CAP THEM if not OUTRIGHT ELIMINATE THEM for Seniors (but, that creates new dodges/cheats, MUST STIPULATE THE PROPERTY MUST HAVE BEEN IN THAT SENIORS NAME FOR MORE THAN 25+ YEARS or idiot Young cheapskates will try to put their Home in Mom/Dad or Grandma/Granddads name to claim the Exemption or discount; AND obviously too then ONLY ONE PROPERTY QUALIFIES).. Also, those on DISABILITY who worked their Lives, struggling now to get by on SSD (full discloser, that includes me since 2004 after 25+ years of Working) should also get the Exemption/consideration, but let me be clear I’ve been on about this issue long before it ever started to effect me! We have more than A DOZEN people running for MIGOV on MIGOP side for 2022 to oust #WHITLER… I’ve been on this issue for years, will really push it this time asking about it over and over and over every time I can corner a Candidate about it in front of a crowd….IF NOT ELIMINATE it for those over 65yo, it needs to be DRASTICALLY REDUCED (say 50% further exemption (cut current SEV by 50%, which would then be like assessed at 25% value)) at least!!!

@JLenardDetroit We still have them in TX, but if you have a homestead exemption they will freeze them when you are 65 or older. We have also voted in to keep them frozen at the current rate when one spouse dies (and the other is under 65), and when a disabled veteran dies (who was also given some exemptions), so that the surviving spouse isn’t hit with a suddenly higher mortgage.

So I added more (in response to another that whined that a $50K exemption, if we did it by dollar amount exemption off even the SEV assessment)…..

I would be WILLING TO SETTLE FOR THAT as BETTER THAN NOTHING.

BUT SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE! If a Senior is living in a $ 200 k plus home they could likely downgrade to a $ 100 k smaller one and w/ $ 50 k exemption would have FAR MORE REASONABLE Property Tax Bill.THIS DISCUSSION OBVIOUSLY, but not for some, IS A DISCUSSION OF REASONABLE STATES TO BEGIN WITH and certainly NOT places like CA, NJ, NY, etc…. If you have pathetic high Property Value and Taxes in those States or other BLUE CITIES in other States….. MOVE! GET THE BLEEP OUT for somewhere more reasonable……. NO, IF we allow them to raise the Sales Tax by just 0.1% won’t add much at check-outs and WILL NOT FULLY OFFSET/SHIFT (as the original Prop-A did) THE ENTIRE COST OF CUTTING PROPERTY TAXES FOR SENIORS TO HELP THEM STAY IN THEIR HOMES (often paid for, but that they cannot afford the “RENT” idiots in Govt charge via Property Taxes and have their Homes FORECLOSED UPON)!

And it SHOULD NOT be fully paid for, offset, shifted, BUDGET CUTS elsewhere should be made to offset the Costs…. We are LONG OVERDUE for BUDGET CUTS anyway…. Govt, Local, State, Federal, has got to go on a Fiscal DIET and start learning to do within its (rather, our, the Taxpayers,) means and what we can afford…….
