What is punk? During the 16^th century a “whore”, a prostitute, a seller of sex was called a “punk” for both male and female. Over the centuries punk became a synonym for, hooligan, thug, delinquent, vandal, ruffian, a person yearning for hot sex. This is one reason influential bands adopted the words “punk rock” in the mid 70’s helping to establish and legitimize the genre “Punk Rock”. Bands including the Sex Pistols, Ramones, Stooges, Misfits, Black Flag, The Adicts, Skins, Brains, on and on and on. For one group or one person to say “they established, they define, they own punk rock, or they are the most relevant in punk music” would make them an idiot. Punk is a community, a standard, you either know it or you don’t, and punk has various layers.
