April Fools: Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula takes over Abyan Province in Yemen!

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

No, unfortunately al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has declared Abyan Province in Yemen an Islamic Emirate governed by Sharia Law

While the world focuses on Libya, the unrest around the Middle East continues to churn.
President Obama has hitched much of his 2012 re-election wagon to the military action in Libya, hoping (I think) that the rebels we are backing are not simply al-Qaeda in disguise, that NATO can run the military show we backed out of while we remain in financially, that Gadaffi leaves even though we don’t really know who the rebels are that would take over and that in the meantime there is no wholesale slaughter of civilians (supposedly our whole purpose for being there in the first place).
Now while “all eyes” are on Libya, the rest of the Middle East continues to face violent turmoil and unrest, leaving one to wonder how all of this will play out for Israel, the United States and the world. Let’s take a look at some of the stories that have been replaced by the predominantly all Libya, all of the time coverage by the media.
  • Humanitarian disaster in Japan dealing with earthquake damage, tsunami damage and the potential for nuclear disaster.
  • In Syria security forces are shooting civilians in the street as Bashar al-Assad fights to hold onto power.
  • The very real potential still exists for the Muslim Brotherhood to assume control of the Egyptian government (Not a secular organization regardless of what James Clapper says).
  • The Iranian quest for nuclear weapons is still marches on despite the fact that you don’t hear much talk about it out of the mainstream media. I suppose they may simply be confident that the United Nations sanctions renders any need for coverage irrelevant.
  • The monarchy in Saudi Arabia continues to look a little old and shaky as they distribute billions in an attempt to purchase relative calm from the citizens (where will oil be if that government falls?).
  • In Bahrain the government is stepping up the crackdown on the Shia opposition.
  • In Tunisia, where it all began, protestors are rioting today in Tunis over the fact that the country is maintaining secular law and not instituting Sharia Law.
  • There is widespread unrest in Jordan where the government is blaming a wing of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamic Action Front, for stirring it up.
  • Iraq is facing demonstrations in the streets as well.
  • Violence in Afghanistan is on the rise as 12 people died today in a bombing of a United Nations office (strongly condemned by President Obama).
  • Please advise of any that were missed.
So as you see, although these stories are not covered with any particular thoroughness in the media, they still exist creating much more danger in the world today than anyone could possibly imagine.
At the Guardian there is an excellent interactive timeline of the events in the Middle East. It can be seen here.
A final non-April Fools Day thought I had is whether there are very many people in this country and around the world who have any faith in this Presidents ability to handle much more than picking a March madness bracket, let alone a crisis as deep and potentially damaging as the Middle East.
Happy April Fool’s Day!
